Scary games, looking for trouble or just good fun?

I´m actually suprised that survival horror games are that popular, because I think a lot of people don´t like to be scared. Of course that doesn´t make every survival horror game scary, still there are games that will mess with your mind and keep you up at night. I´d say the biggest problem with that is probably your own imagination, because you can make things as scary as you want. So a branch that scratches your window could easily be mistaken for a monster scratching his claws on your window. In the dark nothing is what it seems...

So why would anyone want to expose himself or herself to anything scary? I think there are multiple reasons for that but I like to believe that we somehow want to expand our limits, as a kid you probably can´t take that much but the older you get the more you can handle. Well most of the time, I guess some people just have a very low tolerance to anything that they consider as disturbing. Maybe some people just like to test their limits or some people just like scary things, I don´t think there always has to be a solid reason why you do something. Sometimes you just do things, ok that was a lame attempt to quote some fictional character from a movie.

Scary or fun? When I look at the first Silent Hill game it was quite disturbing but I kept playing the story kind of sucked me in and I just wanted to see how it ended. I guess curiosity was my biggest motivation, still I made my way through some weird moments and I got a nice little anti hospital feeling as a reward for that curiosity. Not that I was ever a fan of hospitals, but really Silent Hill left some mental scars in my mind. Still that has never kept me from playing any of the sequels, even if that pushed me into a hospital and it has never kept me from going into a real hospital. I´d say that sometimes your own imagination can be your biggest enemy, when you hear something that you already picture the worst thing possible while it´s most of the time nothing special. So why do I keep playing scary games? Because I enjoy it, I have fun playing games like that and even when it sometimes pushes you into some disturbing moments you find yourself stronger afterwards. Sure I could´ve sheltered myself from that, but I think I would´ve been not much different than the scared kid I was. So aside from having fun with games, I´d say it also made me stronger and playing scary games gives me a higher tolerance to disturbing things. Of course the jump scare moments in games can be quite scary, but I must admit that sometimes I hardly react to that. Maybe that´s thanks to a lot of experience with scary games or maybe I just secretly like it. Games don´t always have to be about rainbows and butterflies, sometimes people like to see something else and I really like it that there are so many games out there that allow you to go for that experience. But if things get too scary then you can always turn the lights back on and unplug your headhpones, see it´s just a game!
