How do I improve my skills?

I think a lot of gamers that play online competitive games sometimes think about improving their skills, because it sucks if you´re beaten that many times. Even when you don´t care who wins or what your k/d is, I don´t think someone wants to be the guy or girl that has zero kills and twenty deaths! Because no matter how much fun a game is, when you lose all the time your fun might be severely limited.

How do I improve my skills? The easiest answer is practice, in a fighting game you can practice and also in first person shooters you often have the option to fight against bots. Improve your reflexes and learn the button combinations from memory, everything should feel like a reaction. When you have to think what you´re doing then you´re doing it wrong. A lot of games are based on how fast you are, your response time will be very important in a lot of competitive games. So I´d say you have a benefit if you started gaming at a young age, but I don´t think that you´re facing an impossible task if you started at a later age with gaming. Racing games are often determined how well you know the track, the better you learn how fast you can go at a certain point of the map the more you can get out of the race. With strategy I´d say patience is often a good quality to have, but also being able to predict the move of your opponent(s) will often lead you to victory.

I need to have all that to win? No that would be a little bit too much, but it´s not impossible. Still the amount of people that can play in the pro league on all genres of gaming are quite limited. I´d say it´s better that you focus on one or two genres and improve your skills with that. Also don´t be too quick to give up, you´ll have to go through a lot of shit to get somewhere. Other gamers can make your life miserable but I think you play games for your amusement and not theirs. So don´t be discouraged if you suck, because we´ve all been there and I know that sometimes with a new game I´m right back at the beginning of how I started. Other times it can be when I haven´t played a game for quite some time, it takes some time to get back into your old form and kick ass as I normally would. Unfortunately there is no guarantee for this. Even all the practice in the world can´t always make you a pro gamer, I guess sometimes you just have to settle with what you got. It sucks to admit it but sometimes other people are just better at certain games than you.

Any tips for a new or inexperienced gamer? Of course, there are always tips for people who are new to gaming or playing in a certain genre. One of the most important things you might want to think of when you play games against other people is not to get mad, you won´t play better and you might find yourself on youtube looking like an idiot. Don´t be suprised to find veterans in a standard deathmatch or fighting mode, because some of these people are too scared to play the veteran playlist and prefer to get easy kills on new or inexperienced players. If you meet a camper then ignore him or her, if you keep running into his line of sight then he or she keeps getting easy kills. Don´t run around too much in first person shooters, because you´re an easy target for everyone that moves around slowly on the map. Pick a weapon that suits you just fine, don´t pick things that look cool but you can´t handle, the same counts for characters in a fighting game! Learn from your mistakes, use different ways to beat someone and don´t stick to the same shit all the time.

Good luck!
