Diversity is the spice of life

When I´m in a lobby with other gamers waiting for the next round I sometimes check their profiles, just to get an idea with whom I´m playing. I doubt I´m the only one that does that but do you also check what type of games the other players have played?

I´ve noticed that a lot of people play only a certain number of games, usually all within the same genre as the game we´re playing at that moment. Maybe this is the fault of where I´m checking, because often in a CoD Ghosts lobby I check other profiles. Does this say something about CoD players or is there more going on here? I think it´s a cheap answer to just say that CoD players are simple minded idiots, of course this is partly confirmed when I see their behaviour in the game. Always running into you when you´re on the same team, not moving an inch out of the way when you need to pass someone and often they´re unable to learn from their mistakes. Ok now that the prejudice is out of the way I think we can get back to business!

So why do some people only have a few games on their profile? I´d say that´s partly to blame because a lot of people play on a secondary account, the low gamerscore and the few games they´ve played often confirm this. So how do you know it´s a secondary account? Often a long gold status (the number behind your gamertag) gives that away. Some people prefer to play on a secondary account when it comes to competitive multiplayer, I´m sure some people have their reasons but I can´t help but find it a bit cowardly. So you need to use a different account for multiplayer? Are you scared bad people will bother you with their pathetic messages? Or is this because you like to be an asshole online and make certain that this way they can´t bother you on your real account? Whatever the reason is I don´t really care, it´s not the point of what I´m trying to talk about! But what I´m trying to say with this is that just because you see a profile with only a few games on it then it doesn´t mean that person isn´t playing a lot of games, most likely he or she is just playing on a secondary account.

What´s so special about being diverse when it comes to gaming? First of all it´s always a good thing to try more than just one thing, I mean how can you ever develop yourself when you keep yourself from trying more than one thing in life. I think it´s the same for gamers, if you only play a few games and/or games from only one genre then you´re missing out on so many other fantastic games. Never limit yourself to just one or two things, sure you might not be the best in everything but is that really that important? How about going on an epic adventure in Fable? Fighting against an ancient race of machines in Mass Effect? Surviving the zombie onslaught in Dead Rising 3? You could even give racing a try in Forza 5! I know that some games are a lot of fun and I know that I´ve played certain games a lot more than others, but that has never kept me from playing other games. There are so many games out there that you can play, it would be a real shame if you would deny yourself from that. I´m not saying you´ll be a happier person if you play more than one type of game, but I do think you might be pleasantly suprised by some of these games. It doesn´t always have to resolve around shooting people in the head...unless it´s a zombie game because then that´s all that really matters if you want to survive!
