The ultimate sidekick of 2013!
In some games you have someone that tags along with you, in most of these games this character is usually not the smartest and half of the time even annoying. Do I have to bring up Sheva from Resident Evil 5? I don´t hate the character Sheva, but I hate how she would always stand in the way of when I was shooting at enemies. The worst thing that could happen that just when I shot a rocket at an enemy that she would just walk past my line of fire and got me killed. That´s what I call a bad sidekick! But this isn´t about a bad sidekick, this is about the best sidekick from 2013!
What makes a good sidekick? I´d say not being a bother to the player is a big plus for any sidekick, you don´t want a sidekick to walk in the way or blocking your path, of course you also don´t want the sidekick to kill all enemies when you need that to level up or get items. A sidekick has a place in the fights, it´s nice when a sidekick can tank but you don´t want to feel useless in a fight. That´s why I prefer a sidekick with a supportive role, for example Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite plays that role very well. Once she helps me I can´t imagine playing the game without her help, she´s just awesome! But what about the more agressive sidekick? Of course not every sidekick is in the support role, some actually kick ass all by themself. I think Ellie in the Last of us is a good example of that, she can handle herself and turns out to be an excellent hunter! She doesn´t get in your way and doesn´t kill everyone, but I´ve seen her shoot enemies that were attacking me while I was reloading. Now that´s a good thing I´d say. How about a sidekick that is there with you and is someone you can control? When I think of this then I think about Aiden in Beyond two souls, because you control his powers and with that you can either harass Jodie (the main character) or actually help her. I had a strong guardian angel feeling with Aiden, well maybe a bit less angel but still it´s fun to have someone like that looking out for you. Still it´s not all about being useful, I think that the personality of a sidekick is important as well. It might come in handy to have this person follow you around and help you but if he or she doesn´t say anything and has no personality at all then it´s quite lame. Having some humour in a game usually makes a game more fun to play and the conversations between the main character and the sidekick is a good way to put some humour in it. But it also allows some drama and other emotions to find its way into the game. So only humans make good sidekicks? Of course not! When I look at Call of Duty Ghosts then I have to mention Riley, as a dog lover I couldn´t leave him out. I love games where you have a dog companion, for example Fall Out 3, Fable 2 and 3. Losing your dog in a game is something I would consider as unacceptable and if possible I would actually reload a checkpoint to see if I could do something about that!
Who is the ultimate sidekick of 2013? I think we all have our own favourite and my choice only counts for me, which means that the sidekick I consider the best of 2013 is my favourite and it doesn´t reflect the opinions of anyone else. At least as far as I know. Anyway I think Ellie from the Last of us is the best sidekick. Why? Well I must admit that I´m very impressed by her skills and everything she´s been through at such a young age, it shows how strong she is and I respect that. Also she´s funny at moments but then at other moments she can be serious, she´s really a character with personality and definately has her use in the game. A small spoiler here so if you haven´t played the game then you might want to stop reading here! When you play as her later in the game then it really shows how good she is, because at first Joel (the main character from the game, in case someone that hasn´t played the game keeps reading) doesn´t trust her with a weapon. But later he does and then he sees how useful she can be. I also really like the connection she has with other characters, the emotions on her face look so real and she seems like a real person sometimes. I kept feeling like I had to protect my little sister in the game and I love how the developers did that, to make you feel like you needed to take care of her and yet at the same time you could trust her with things so she wouldn´t need your help all the time. I mostly play Xbox 360 games and for some it might be a suprise that I would pick an exclusive Ps 3 game character as my favourite, but it´s not about which console is better! There are games on both consoles that are a lot of fun! It´s a shame that some of these games are exclusives but I guess that´s how the world of games works, it´s nothing new really because Nintendo and Sega did the same thing in the old days...
