Time travel in games
I think there have been several games that have touched this subject, but I don´t think that there are any games that have nailed it in my opinion. I guess it´s not easy and it also depends what type of game you´re making, because with a puzzle game (point and click) you don´t expect any battles and it´s probably going to be more of an investigation. But with an action/adventure game you expect a lot of battles and then you really have to wonder if time travel is just a way of getting from a to b in the game. I find time travel a very interesting subject and I really hope that there will be a developer that will make an interesting game based on time travel and where it plays a big role.
Over the years there have been several games that had some time travel moments. I think one that actually made a lot of use of the power of time is Singularity, this is where you can move through time and your surroundings and enemies change with it. It´s quite interesting but somehow the game never really interested me enough to go through all that. In other games you would also get control over time and that means that enemies move slower and you move at normal speed, I guess this bullet time is well known and a lot of games have used that. But it´s not really time travel, I mean if you consider that as time travel then we also travel through time only at ´normal´ speed. I´m talking about an exciting adventure and yet at the same time you have battles ahead of you that will test your strength, but also test your intelligence. I´m not looking for another game that offers you some button bashing, I´m looking for something much more than that.
I think movies are a great inspiration for games, unfortunately games based on movies aren´t always the best type of games. I´m not saying it´s all bad, but I think a lot of gamers will agree that movie games aren´t that popular. Which is weird in a way, because if a movie is good then you´d expect the game to be good as well. But then you have another problem, not every movie is always the best foundation for a game. I think the Back to the future movies are fantastic, but I don´t see how you can make an interesting game out of that. Sure there are moments but a whole game seems a bit tricky. I prefer that someone made a game based on the movie Timecop, you might think that this is crap but hear me out! As a timecop you travel through time looking for people who don´t belong there, which means that you either adapt to your surroundings and use weapons and clothing from that time. But another approach would be that you go in future gun blazing, probably changing time quite drastically. You might even secretly be working on making yourself the ruler of the world or you could strive to do good and help make a better future. Of course there could be a plot where someone you care about died in the past and that will be a red line through the story and maybe the ultimate decision if you save that person or not. If you mix some Fable and Mass Effect influence in there then you might actually have a very interesting game, of course it´s easier said than done but I definately see something in that.
Maybe time travel is just a silly idea, something a madman made up and is far from reality. But that´s ok, because games are meant to be fun and that´s often based on fictional ideas. I think that time travel is a great subject for a movie or a game. Perhaps these time travel games seem to be far in the future or maybe they´re not that far away anymore. When I look at footage from the game Quantum Break for the Xbox One then there might actually be something interesting coming our way. I don´t know if this will be a real time travel game or just a game that borrows something from that idea, but I do think it´s going to be interesting. I´d say it´s at least something anyone with a science fiction interest might want to look at, even if it´s just for the sake of investigating some strange moments I´ve seen so far in trailers. We might not have flying cars, super powers or colonization on other worlds. But I do think we´re heading to an interesting future, it´s too bad we can´t take a peek at that just yet...or can we?
