The PUBG type of games, why are they popular?

I personally don't see what's so much fun about these type of games, it has never interested me and I doubt it ever will. But there are a lot of players out there that seem to love these type of games, Player Unknown Battlegrounds (or PUBG) is a good example of this because a lot of people play this game and there seems to always be someone streaming this game. But why? What is so much fun about these type of games?

Be your own man or woman?

In each game there is some sort of thread that you follow, sure there are open world games but there is still a story and something you need to do towards the end. In games like PUBG you can do whatever you want because there is no story and no motivation other than survival to this game. What also makes this game so popular is that you can play it with friends, so you go in the game with a group of friends and match your skills against other players who are also in teams. Then it's a game of survival, tactics and skill. You only have one life and when you're dead you're gone, so you have to be careful and at the same time move towards the circle on the map or you'll die. So your freedom at the start of the game will quickly disappear once the circle appears on the map because if you don't get there in time you will start taking damage if you're not in the circle. You can still choose which path you pick but you have to be in the safe circle to survive! You can move quicker with vehicles but on foot you can usually also make it. The real danger in the game isn't the damage you take outside the safe circle but other players.

Brutal PvP?

If with brutal you mean brutal executions then no, but it is brutal in the way that if you die then you're out. There is no respawn once you die in the game. Which is harsh but people seem to love this. Apparently a lot of people enjoy this type of PvP and like the struggle for survival of the fittest. I can't say I enjoy this so much, mostly because of how games like this are like candy for campers. So imagine you being the guy who hunts down others and moving around and here is Johnny no skill just sitting there and waiting for you to be within range to be killed with one or two shots. Of course the camper will have to move eventually unless he or she is already in the right spot for the safe circle. The safe circle is random so you can't always expect to be in the right spot. So that's at least a good thing, otherwise campers would have it way too easy in these type of games. I do enjoy the start of PUBG type of games when everyone is rushing towards weapons which creates some really hectic and crazy moments where you need a bit of luck, because if you can't find a weapon in time and someone else you bump into has a weapon then you're pretty much done for!

There are more and more games like PUBG?

I can see a rise of these type of games and also keep in mind that PUBG wasn't the first to come up with this. You already have Arma 3 Battle Royale, but lately I see a lot of people who play PUBG and also in Fortnite there is a new PvP mode (still a beta version) where you can face eachother on the battlefield in PUBG style. Somehow people love this and so more and more developers will make these type of games or put these type of game modes in games. I can't say I'm happy with that but if it makes other people happy then who am I to say that it shouldn't be in a game? What I like about games is that there are so many different games, so even if you don't like PUBG type of games then there are a lot of other games out there. In the end it's all about having fun and there is nothing wrong with that!
