Divinity: Original Sin 2, the hottest game at the moment?
These days it seems like nobody can shut up about this game and to be honest the game looks really good, so I can understand why so many people are excited about this game. But is this game really that good or is it just all a hype? Considering that the game sold pretty well in the first week I think it's safe to say that it might actually be a good game, especially when you look at reviews and even random comments about this game seem to be positive most of the time. So maybe Divinity: Original Sin 2 is actually a good game.
Not your average RPG?
The first thing I noticed is that Divinity: Original Sin 2 isn't your average RPG, it's a bit different and with a bit I actually mean a lot different in certain ways. For example the conversations with other characters are fully voiced, ok you don't hear your character speak unless you comment on something you see. But in the conversations it's just text on the screen. The weird thing is that a narrator comments on how someone is responding to what you said or just describe what someone is doing. At first this was odd but it actually puts you even more in the story, making it more visual for you to imagine what's going on. The game also seems to be a bit more mature, so maybe not something for the young gamers or people that can't handle mature content. Another thing that was a big surprise for me is that the game has turn based combat, which is something I don't really like.
Turn based combat sucks?
The last time I played a game with turn based combat was more than a decade ago, the game I'm talking about is Final Fantasy X and that just meant you took turns in fighting. In Divinity: Original Sin 2 you also have to move your characters around and use combat points with that. So for some people this is great, a real strategic masterpiece, for someone like me this is slowing things down a lot and that's less fun when you want to plough through the enemies with your weapons. That doesn't mean that this is a bad game, but it does mean that the game might not be for everyone. Because I know from my own experience that this can be frustrating at times, but if you give it a chance then you can definitely get used to it and maybe even like it.
Make your own character or pick an already existing character?
You can make your own character and the game gives you a lot of options with the character creator. Eventhough certain things are a bit different. For example if you think you can make a lovely elf then you have to keep in mind that the elves in Divinity: Original Sin 2 are corpse eaters and look a bit different, they're still cool but different. If you don't feel like creating your own character or prefer to use an already existing character then you can do that as well. This also seems to fit better in the story from what I've seen so far. Because characters are actually using your name instead of just naming you that guy or girl. Character creation is one of my favourite things to do in RPGs so I'm glad that Divinity: Original Sin 2 doesn't disappoint!
Should you get this game?
If you like RPGs and especially this kind of RPG (turn based combat and mature content) then yeah you should totally get this game. The game looks pretty good and the conversations with other characters can be quite funny and interesting. I love these type of games that offer a rich story, interesting characters and a lot of things to do and discover. The combat system is something I would have to get used to but it doesn't scare me off. Everything can be learned and even if I would suck at it at first you can always get better, as long as you're willing to try. What's also good news is that there is talk about console versions of the game, so you don't have to get it for your PC. I must admit that these type of games probably play much better on PC but it's nice that console gamers get a chance to discover this game as well. The game might not be for everyone but it's definitely worth checking out, even if you're just a little bit interested.
