The art of convincing people to join your clan

Whenever you walk around in a multiplayer game that has a clan, guild or other type of groups system you can bet your ass on it that you'll get random invites. Especially if you have a high level character and/or some really good gear. People want you to join their clan, but at the same time they often want to do as little to convince you. Which often results in blind invites where people don't actually send you a message but just stick to the clan invite. Which is in my opinion lazy and absolutely no reason to join a clan!

Why do people send blind invites to others?

Because it's faster and takes less effort than actually talking to people. I think most people have no real intention in getting to know you but they're just looking for people to join their clan. Maybe they just started and need several members to get acces to the clan benefits. Some people start talking to you once you join the clan, but only if you join and this isn't even a guarantee. I guess it's just easier to send a blind invite to someone, it takes very little effort and you'll find out sooner or later if someone wants to join. There are some people that have succes with this and others who have no succes with this. It really depends on who you are and what your clan is. Some might join your clan to see what kind of clan it is, how many people are in the clan and how active the clan is. A lot of these people won't stick around for long though.

How do you invite people to join your clan?

You can send a blind invite, like so many other douchebags, but in my opinion that is just lazy and dumb. Back in my early days with online multiplayer I was a very active guild recruiter in Guild Wars Factions. I wouldn't send random invites but actually talk with people. Just random conversations to get to know people and if you get along with someone you could always invite them to your guild. But it wasn't my intention to invite them, I was actually interested in getting to know these other players. Why did they buy the game, why did they pick that character, why did they pick that name and also where are they from? Just some random questions I would ask, a way for me to get to know them and see if they would be interested in teaming up or maybe eventually join your guild in the game. It takes a bit of effort but some people really appreciate it that you take some time to get to know them. You can easily be anonymous player number 98743 in a game but there is often a story behind that gamertag or name they picked in the game. Maybe my method is too old fashioned and nobody does that anymore, which would be a shame but I guess these days everything needs to go fast. But if you show a little bit of interest people are more likely to be interested in joining your clan instead of showing no interest and just sending a random blind invite. People consider that as spam and most likely won't join your clan.

Some people are just not interested?

No matter how nice or patient you are some people just don't want to join or even talk for that matter. Which is fine, not everyone in an online multiplayer game is social and they don't have to be if they don't want to. Eventhough online multiplayer often hints towards working as a team there are enough people who don't want to team up or join other people in a mission or clan. You can't blame them because it's just not for them. I know some people get upset and will yell at someone for not wanting to join, which just shows what kind of douchebag that person really is, but you have to keep in mind that not everyone is looking for a clan. For every ten conversations I would make with people sometimes only one or two would want to join my guild or would even respond at certain moments. That can be tough but don't let it stop you from being social and friendly. Sooner or later you will find people that are going to appreciate your way of approaching them. I mean wouldn't you rather join a clan when someone actually talks to you before sending an invite instead of joining a clan without anyone first talking to you? It's nice when you know what you're joining, what kind of people are in the clan and what does the clan do? This is important information people might be interested in before joining. This might also help you get more people to join. But try not to make it a sales pitch or copied and pasted piece of text. People will see through that and might not take you seriously. The most important part is that you're having fun. I really liked being a recruiter, I did it for several years and only stopped because it wasn't that fun for me anymore. Which is my last advice for you, do this for fun and not for some attempt to be the best at something. Have fun with the people in your clan and make the most of what you have. Who cares that you only have ten people in your clan? If you're having fun together then that's what is important!
