Sinful Sunday: BM (gaming)
When you play games with other people then there comes a time when you encounter less friendly people, often people that for no real reason turn into real scumbags. But there are also people that just want to annoy or bully other people, which is also not fun at all. This type of behaviour is often known as BM, bad manners, when people behave badly in a game and make the life or lives of other people miserable.
How does BM start?
It can be quite subtle, for example you spamming an emote or a character line constantly when you kill someone in a game or win a game. But there are also people that will just say or type that the other team sucks. BM is really just behaviour, so in a way anyone could do it and for no real reason at all. I've seen BM start in a team that was winning and in a team that was losing, eventhough sad losers often rage quit. Sometimes someone just has a bad day and reacts more negative towards certain things that happen in a game and will often start the BM because he or she isn't in a positive mood at the moment. But then there are also people who are just known to BM, because that's just the way they are. Why be nice and polite when you can be an utter douchebag? Sometimes BM can also be the response of the behaviour of other people, for example teabagging often makes people other people also resort to teabagging. You can then have a whole discussion about who started it but honestly there are no winners there, just losers.
How do you handle BM?
That's simple, block and ignore. For example yesterday I was playing Fortnite and I was doing the 14 day survival. This means playing for more than 4 hours with the same people. This one guy kept annoying me with joining his team chat. I declined, we were playing the level 15 version and most of us had almost double that level so this wasn't a challenge at all. Then he sent me a message, the message said join. As if I'm a dog that has to obey. I politely typed a message back saying that I have a cold and sounded terrible. Imagine me sneezing and coughing for 4 hours, not really something you want to hear. I also explained that since we all have much higher levels than needed that communication wasn't really needed because as long as we all do our best it should be easy. He replies with this: join u cunt. Honestly people that can't even type the word you already make me want to punch them but then insults as well? I didn't feel like starting an argument so I just blocked this guy and ignored him, why waste time on a sad sack of shit? This guy must have gotten so mad that he rage quitted from the game. So it was just me and two other people to defend. Which worked out fine because we all worked well together without saying a word, as I mentioned before at that difficulty with such high player levels it's not that difficult. I think about thirty minutes later the guy that was being an asshole returned, I guess he cooled off or hoped that I left and so he could join without me being in the team, and didn't say a word and just started building. It's easy to get mad, to start yelling at eachother and let BM turn into something ugly. But when someone is being an asshole it's so much easier to just ignore this person. Why waste time on someone that isn't even worth responding to anymore? If someone is teabagging you then you can have your revenge, but honestly that would make you just as sad as this other person. Just ignore the sad sack of shit and try to beat him or her whenever you encounter this person. What I like to do is the stare, I look down at their corpse and just stare as if their nothing. Maybe also BM in a way but a lot more subtle and satisfying.
Do you BM?
I try not to,but I'm not pretending to be the super nice guy that wants to get along with others. Often when I play in a team I like to go my own way and do my own things, not that I hate working as a team but I find it more fun to do my own thing. Of course in certain games it's better to work as a team and stick around the objective. You can find me there and I will do my best. If things don't go so well I'll be unhappy but I don't plug in a mic and tell everyone how much they suck. I also don't want to annoy the losing team if I win. I always like to think to these words. Don't treat others the way you don't want to be treated. As in be nice to others and hopefully others are nice to you. Of course I know that this is often not true, some people are just assholes and will treat others badly. BM won't disappear just because some people are nice to other people. Things can change with the flip of a switch. I've seen it happen so many times that when people first join a match they're friendly with the hello how are you doing introductions and then when things don't go so well everyone is an asshole and everyone sucks. It's nothing new and I think it will only get worse, people are turning more and more into scumbags online because it's easy and you often get away with it. So why would someone stop? Well maybe because it's not nice and you probably don't want to be treated in a bad way so why would you treat others in a bad way? There are fun and friendly people to play with online but that groups becomes smaller each year. It really makes playing online with others a nasty experience and makes the mute button your best friend these days. Maybe I'm being too much of a pessimist here but I've played a lot of games where things just went from bad to worse, not a fun experience in any way!
