Movie Monday: Hidalgo

Have you ever seen a movie you weren't certain about if it would be fun to watch and that turned out to be amazing? For me that movie is Hidalgo, my sister almost dragged me to this movie because she loves horses so we had to see this movie. Eventhough the movie started a bit slow and it's a pretty long movie, I have to admit that the movie is amazing!

You don't have to like horses to like this movie?

If you don't care about horses then there is still a lot you can enjoy about this movie, because there are some awesome moments where you forget that you're watching a race through the desert with horses. I mean just look at the sandstorm moment, that is really cool! I don't think it really matters if you like horses or not, this movie is pretty good and you liking horses or not has little to do with the quality of the movie. But perhaps the movie is even more intense for horse lovers. For example that moment when one of the horses is badly wounded and the owner has to put the horse down to spare him more suffering. I think this is an emotional moment for most people and especially for those that love horses. I know that whenever I see a dog get hurt in a movie that it feels like a punch in the gut for me, so I think that the same probably counts for people who love horses to see horses suffer or worse. My point is that this movie is for everyone and is absolutely enjoyable to watch, but be careful about some emotional moments!

It's a race?

At certain moments you forget that the movie is about a race, eventhough it might feel like a struggle for survival at other moments. The race is brutal through a desert and Frank Hopkins, played by Viggo Mortensen, has a hard time keeping up with the rest. But this movie isn't just about a race, it's about not giving up and a friendship between a man and a horse. If this is something that sounds cool to you then you're definitely going to enjoy this movie! But that's not all, the beautiful background (yes even a desert can be pretty) and interesting characters bring the movie even more to life and help you sit through movie which is more than two hours, which is pretty long for a movie about a race in my opinion. But it's not just a race movie, it's about believing in something and a friendship that seems to overcome anything. I have to admit that there were moments where I thought that this was it, I mean how could they beat the odds but sometimes amazing things seem to happen. I can definitely recommend this movie if you haven't seen it yet and eventhough it's more than a decade old it's still pretty good and worth checking out!
