Game addiction, a serious problem?

When you say that you're addicted to playing games a lot of people will laugh, they will often not take you seriously and perhaps there are people with a game addiction that don't take it seriously either. But it's not something to laugh about, people have gotten in serious trouble with a game addiction and it can ruin your life! I know that it probably sounds stupid but hopefully I can tell you something about it to at least gives you some information what happens when you're addicted to games and how you could get rid of the game addiction if you think you have one.

It's bad being addicted to playing games?

It is actually, but I can already hear some hardcore gamers say that they play games a lot and it doesn't hurt them. Well when I say that someone has a game addiction then you have to realize that this means they play games all day every day, as in no time for sleep or even eating. Parents are worried about their kid because he or she hardly ever goes outside and they never see him or her at the dinner table. This doesn't automaticly mean you're addicted, but it does mean that you play a lot of games or spend a lot of time on playing games. It seems so innocent but a game addiction can be a big problem. When people spend their money on new games instead of paying bills or when they have no social life because they sit all day behind their computer or console. I know from experience that I lost friends that way, I was always playing games and eventhough I never saw it as an addiction I do realize that I was playing games most of the time and hardly talking with my friends unless it was in a game. It's difficult to stay friends with someone who plays games all day, especially when you don't have that need or want to play games all day. Some people say that an alcohol or drug addiction is much worse and in a way that's true, it has often a more physical impact on the person that is addicted, but that doesn't mean a game addiction is a joke. It is a serious problem for some people and there are people that don't even realize that they're addicted which is already bad enough.

What does a game addiction to you?

It slowly shuts you off from the rest of the world. You start living more and more in this fantasy world, which can be in one game or multiple games, and start losing contact with people from the real world. At first it might be some friends you hang out with after school but eventually it can even mean you don't even talk with your family anymore. People don't recognize you anymore as you become more and more a hermit and sit all day and every day behind your computer or console. It also gives you some physcial problems, for example sitting all day on your butt isn't healthy at all. I think some people already say that sitting is the new type of smoking and is almost just as bad for your body. There is nothing wrong with sitting, but if you sit 16 hours on a day non stop then that isn't good. Especially if this happens every day of the week. Your body becomes weak and it will turn you lazy. I remember a Summer where I was exhausted after running just for a short distance. I know that not everybody is an athlete but honestly being out of breath after just a five second sprint is not good! It's also bad for your body, for example your blood circulation is not good if you sit all day which can cause a lot of issues. I can name a list of physcial issues that can happen when you play games all day every day but let's just say that spending too much time playing games isn't healthy. Especially late at night. Have you ever played games till late at night? The moment where your eyes are red and the blood vessels in your eyes pop and you have blood in your eyes? Yeah not very pleasant, I know that from experience. Gaming has a time and a place, so don't spend the entire day on it or you will suffer for it sooner or later.

How do you stop a gaming addiction?

Of course you could stop playing games but I think that's a bit extreme. Just slowly play less games each day until you're on a healthy amount of time on a day. I think most people would agree that about one or two hours a day is healthy. But most gamers know that in some games you don't get a lot of things done in one or two hours. So my advice for you is if you want to play more than one or two hours then take breaks, for example 10 or 15 minutes of going outside or do some other activities. Get your body moving and get something to drink if you haven't done that. Especially in the Summer you need to stay hydrated! You could also visit a friend or at least contact them with your phone or computer if you have to. Don't cut yourself off from the rest of the world, games might seem like a comfort but there's nothing better than having real friends in your life instead of the characters in a game. If you're afraid that you will get bored then I advice you to get another hobby, find another activity that gets you out of the house or at least gets you moving. Sitting still all day behind a computer or tv isn't healthy! You can lock your computer or console away in a closet but honestly that will just be torture for you. Instead try to keep things under control with a schedule. So put two hours of gaming on your schedule on a day and put something else for the rest of the time. If you don't think you can do that on your own then ask for help. I'm certain that family and good friends would want to help you. You don't have to do it alone! It's your life and you only live once, so try to make the most of it.
