Old games are better than new games?
I often hear some people talk about how games from their youth, I'm talking about late 80's and early 90's, are much better than most games that are out now. But is that true? I know that I have fond memories of some of those games but I wouldn't really say that those games are better. I guess it's a bit of nostalgic value and thinking that it's better while in truth they're not really better.
Old games are better than new games?
That's really just an opinion and often an opinion based upon someone have fond memories of these old games. I know that I enjoyed Super Mario Bros 3, the battle mode between Mario and Luigi was super simple but so much fun if you played that with a friend. I remember this one time where I played the game with a friend all night long. I have fond memories of that game but I wouldn't call it one of the best games I've ever played. The same counts for Duck Hunt, a funny game at the time but when you look at it now I can't help but get the feeling that it lost most of its charm. Wouldn't you much rather play a game like Battlefield, Halo 5, Overwatch or any other first person shooter? There is nothing wrong with liking old games, but claiming that they're better than new games is honestly just a matter of opinion and not something that should be stated as a fact!
What's wrong with old games?
Nothing, but at the same time I would have to mention that old games often had these annoying sides to them. For example the limited amount of lives, so if you run out of lives it's game over and you can start the game from the beginning. Maybe some people like that but I hate it! Give me infinite continues any day over the limited lives nonsense! Another thing that was popular in old games is the time limit, so you would have to complete the game within a certain amount of time or it would be game over. I know that some new games have that as well but honestly this is something we don't need! I like to take my time with a game. When I'm in Skyrim I can do whatever I want and take my time with the main missions or other things. There is no time limit and I can enjoy the game as it should be! There are other things that I don't like either, for example the one hit and you're dead games, the ending of a game which is just one screen of text or a screenshot of the hero and games that have no option to save so you either keep your console on or you lose all progress and you have to start over the next day. Yeah great times with those games...
Why do some people think that old games are better than new games?
My guess is that a lot of these people have fond memories of these old games and a nostalgic feeling can be quite powerful. For example one of my favourite games is the Battle of Olympus, this is an old NES game, and these days the game is just ridiculous if you compare it to a game like the legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild or Skyrim. But for me this game is amazing, since I like Greek Mythology this game is exactly something I would enjoy and I still have good memories of me making it further in the game all the way to the final boss that was invisible unless you had the special item to make his shadow visible in the moon light. Today it's been exactly 25 years ago when I got my first console, the NES, and I have a lot of fond memories of that console and the games I played on that console. But I would never claim it to be the best console or that those games are better than the games that are out now. But that doesn't mean you can't have nice memories of those games or that you can't enjoy playing these games. If I look at the game that have come out just this year I see a lot of fun games, games I wish that I could've played when I was a kid. But you're never too old to play games, so instead of comparing old and new games and trying to convince others what is better we should just play the game we want to play and enjoy playing them. That's the reason why you play games, at least I certainly hope so.
