Agents of Mayhem (first impression)
I wasn't able to play this game a lot last weekend but I did put in several hours to at least get an idea what kind of game I'm dealing with. I discovered some fun things, some exciting things but also some frustrating things. Things got so frustrating that I just turned off my console, which doesn't happen a lot. So is Agents of Mayhem a game you should buy? Well I'll give you my opinion and then you can decide what you do with that information.
Limitless fun?
Agents of Mayhem doesn't take itself too seriously, which is good because the serious approach would be a big mistake. A lot of the conversations and situations in the game are meant to be funny, I'm not saying it was all comedy gold but there are definitely funny moments in the game. I guess it also depends as which character you're playing, because each character has his or her own response to certain situations. When you're in the city, Seoul, you can do whatever you want. There is a lot of freedom and you can do pretty much al lot of crazy things. The crazy side missions are a bit lacking, for as far as I've seen so far, but the flexible controls are absolutely enjoyable. I really like the triple jump and having the ability to dash or to climb buildings like Spider-Man. The missions are ok, some aren't that interesting and others can be really frustrating. The missions to aquire an agent can be a pain the ass to complete. Just looking at the Yeti mission when you have to hack consoles and you constantly get shot which interrupts you. His weapon doesn't have a lot of range so you will have to get close and thus leave the hacking console to kill enemies that will respawn soon after you killed them. This is frustrating and not fun at all, it really surprises me how this type of crap gets inside games. You would think that someone with a brain would figure out that this isn't fun at all!
So many agents and yet it feels like someone is missing?
No I'm not talking about Gat, I actually got Gat as a pre-order bonus and he's absolutely a fun character to play as in the game. But what I'm really missing is your own character, an agent you could create and customize. This is what made the Saints Row games so much fun for me, to be able to create my own character in that crazy world. But now I play as other characters and eventhough that is fun it would've been better if you could've played as you own customized character. Just slapping a different skin on an already existing agent isn't as much fun as creating an agent from nothing. That way you could've made him or her as silly or cool as you would want to. Now you have to deal with characters that either work for you or don't. Yeti for example is a character I don't like a lot, it really sucks in his recruitment mission when you have to play solo as him. In a team he's useful but on his own he feels less impressive and even frustrating at moments. But characters like Gat, Hollywood, Braddock and Kingpin make up a lot with their awesome abilities.
Should you buy Agents of Mayhem?
If I would have to be totally honest with you then I would have to say no, because paying 60 Euros for this game is a lot and I don't think it's worth it. Sure it has funny moments and yes there are very cool moments in the game that I enjoyed. But when I look at the big picture then I can't say that my first impression of the game was that amazing. The Kingpin mission is bugged, for the last part the enemies don't spawn on the rooftop so I can't complete the mission and when Yeti wen down in his solo mission the game froze which was also not fun at all. I guess you can't avoid these problems with new games these days but it doesn't make the game more fun, it makes it more frustrating to be honest with you. Of course I could lie and say that the game is amazing but in all honesty it's not, it really isn't. I have fun in certain moments but get bored or frustrated in other moments. So that's the opposite of fun and that's not a game I can recommend to others. Feel free to check it out if you really want to play this game but don't say that I didn't warn you! To be safe I would definitely recommend you to rent the game first before you buy it, just to see if you really are willing to buy this game.
