Sinful Sunday: Leeching in a game
Leeches are unpleasant creatures but have a function, in games there are also leeches but these type of leeches aren't useful at all! Lately I've seen some leeches in Fortnite and I also heard other people talk a lot about encountering these unpleasant people. But what is a leech exactly and how do you deal with them? Let's find out!
What is a leech?
A leech in a game is someone who does nothing but takes all the benefits of others playing the objective and/or game. Some might do something, shoot some enemies or walk around, giving others the impression that they're not leeching but in fact they are leeching. These people love joining high level matches so they get a lot of experience for doing very little to nothing at all. This is of course very frustrating for other players because they feel like they do all the work while the leech just sits there and gets all the rewards they earn. This isn't fair and it should stopped, unfortunately not every game gives you a lot of options to stop these leeches.
How do you stop a leech from leeching?
If there is a vote to kick system you could try to get rid of these leeches if the other people in the match help you with kicking this person. Then there is often the option to report someone, because leeching isn't acceptable behaviour. You could also try to talk to the leech and tell him or her to do something or ask him or her to leave. Don't be surprised if this person will ignore you, some aren't even watching and check in every ten minutes or so to see if the others have completed the mission already. The worst part is when there is very little that you can do, you feel powerless and it makes you miserable. You can leave the match and leave the leech alone in a match but if you made a lot of progress in a match then it feels wrong to abandon that just because of some asshole that is leeching. A lot of times people are almost forced to accept that the leech is there and that there is very little you can do about it. But don't give up! Report these people, make certain that the developers know about this problem and that they have to put a system in their game that prevents this from happening. For example people who contribute nothing also get nothing, no experience and no other rewards for completing the mission. Of course this is easier said than done and it remains to be seen how many games can actually make this work so it stops people from leeching in a game.
The Fortnite leeches are rising?
I play Fortnite every day and I love playing this game, but lately there have been a lot of leeches in the game. People who don't want to build, fight monsters or really do anything. They just sit at spawn and wait for the other players to finish the mission. Especially on high level missions you start to encounter these leeches, people who come into a level 40 mission with a level 19 character. How useful do you think this person is going to be? I do realize that the matchmaking in Fortnite is shite, I've tried the play with others option and it often puts you in the highest level type of missions in that region. Which is really frustrating! So not every low level character is trying to leech, I know that some will do their best but the fact remains that there are a lot of leeches in the game. I hope it doesn't ruin the game for me because that would be unfortunate to say the least. The best weeks of a game are usually the first couple of weeks, after that people either become annoying or just lazy. It's not fun to play with either type.
