Are you being forced to play with other people in online games?
I like to play games and I prefer to play them on my own. This isn't some anti social bullshit but I just like to play games in my own time and do things my way. When you play with others you have to work together and it often means that you have less freedom to do what you want. It's not a bad thing to play with other people, but some people just prefer to play on their own. Developers seem to like having people play games together, so you're probably not surprised that some developers (kindly) push you towards playing with other people. As nice as this might be for some people I'm not a big fan of it!
How do developers force you to play with other people?
Maybe force isn't the right word, it's more a form of manipulation. For example to earn some good loot or get extra experience you have to play with other people. When I look at Injustice 2 then nine out of ten times at least one of the daily objectives, you earn mother boxes with that which contain loot, is play an online match against other people or multiple matches against other people. If you don't want to do that but you do want to get the mother box you have to decide if you want to play online with others or just give up on at least one of the three daily objectives and also the reward that you get with that. In other games like Destiny you can only get the best gear, in raids, if you play with other people. Your solo path only takes you that far and only gets you up to a certain point with gear. For the best gear you need to play with other people, wether you like it or not! Then there are also developers that put achievements or trophies in a game that you can only earn if you play with other people. Which is a clever way for those achievement and trophy hunters to step outside their solo gameplay bubble and jump into multiplayer. Yesterday I decided to play with other people in Fortnite, I had a daily objective and a side mission that gave me rewards if I played a total of three matches with other people and on top of that you earn an achievement/trophy if you complete that daily objective. So I had enough reason to do it, but I still didn't like it. Oh sure I earn extra experience, I got the rewards for completing the side mission and daily objective (and I got the achievement) but it limited my gameplay because of the three matches I played two of those are shield defense missions and the host of the match didn't want us to build anything so you're pretty much playing with one hand tied behind your back. Is that fun? No it's not. On top of that nobody communicates and really wants to work together, so you end up being forced to play together just for the rewards. But I guess that's the way you play games now, not because you really want to but because of the rewards.
Why is it lame to play with other people?
It's not always lame, but in a lot of games it can be lame. Mostly because a lot of people are either toxic (rage a lot and blame you if things go wrong) or they don't say anything at all. These aren't fun people to play games with. But unfortunately my online experience usually exists with these type of people, so you can imagine that I'm not that excited to play online with other people. I know that there are fun people out there to play with but they become more rare each year. Usually because these people have a group of friends they play with and there's often no room for more. I used to really enjoy playing games with others, it was fun and exciting in games like Saints Row, Guild Wars and Team Fortress 2. But these games are old now and I guess so am I. But developers keep pushing you towards playing with others and it can be tempting for certain rewards, but having to deal with some of the shit that goes on in those games is really lame and not fun at all! I play games for fun and it's nice when you win, but unfortunately most people consider gaming as someting else because the moment things go wrong the screaming and hating starts. Then there are matches where nobody says a thing and you get destroyed by a team of friends that does communicate, yeah that's also great fun.
Why are developers forcing you to play with other people?
Once again they don't really force you, it's more of a nudge in the multiplayer direction. They try to tempt you with cool rewards or extra experience and a lot of people are interested in that even if they're not interested in playing games with other people. I think that developers want people to experience the full game and that often includes multplayer. Then there are games that are meant to be played with other people, Pay Day 2 is a good example of that but don't be surprised if a large group of players plays this game on their own with bots. Sometimes developers try to lure people to multiplayer with rewards, for example good loot or achievements/trophies. This doesn't work for everyone but some people are willing to play multiplayer just for these rewards. You can't stop developers from doing this and I doubt it will ever stop, because why would they? If you launch a new game and the majority only plays the game on their own and completely ignores multiplayer then I understand that some developers feel like they have to do something to convince players to team up with eachother. The problem is that not everyone is interested in that, some people even hate it. As much as I like to get good loot and achievements I don't enjoy being pushed into multiplayer and have a bad experience there. That's not fun at all! I don't blame developers for what they're doing but it can be frustrating sometimes, because sometimes you just want to play the game and get as much out of the game as you can without having to play with other people. There are moments where I want to play with other people and moments where I want to play on my own, I prefer it that I decide when I play with others and when I play on my own and not have developers tempt me with rewards that I can only get if I play with other people. In the end it's just a game though, so missing out on some of the rewards is not the end of the world. At least I don't think it is, maybe it's different for other people...
