Movie Monday: John Wick
After the announcement of John Wick 2 I couldn't help but think back of John Wick. This is a movie I didn't think was going to be that good, I mean the action looks interesting in the trailer but the whole revenge idea is nothing new and beating the overwhelming odds seems like it's been done in dozens of other movies before. But John Wick isn't just another action movie, it's a movie where I actually wanted the bad guys to suffer because of what they did. Of course they're all actors but the anger you feel when John's puppy is killed by the robbers is so overwhelming that I couldn't help but feel that I wanted them to suffer.
Not a movie for dog lovers?
Probably not, eventhough John's quest to kill the people that killed his puppy is giving you some satisfaction it's still hard to see that moment where John buries the puppy. That's a moment where I really feel sad and at the same time so mad. So you can imagine how good it feels when John starts killing the people responsible and he does it with ease. That makes this movie a thrill ride, but at the same time also a bit of an emotional ride if you consider the sad moments. I think that Keanu Reeves is doing a great job as John Wick, I know that people had doubts about him as John Constantine but as John Wick he's kicking ass!
So it's not just a kill everyone that you can kind of movie?
Not really, but I understand why some people might think that. It's not that John Wick is going on a kill frenzy, he just wants to kill the people responsible for killing his puppy and everyone dumb enough to get in his way. Which is still quite a lot of people but it's not like you ever see John as the bad guy in the movie, eventhough what he does isn't exactly good guy behaviour. John is a retired hitman so things start a bit slow, but things go faster the further you get in the movie. Maybe that makes the movie not good for everyone, especially people that expected a body to hit the floor every ten seconds. I wasn't certain about this movie at first but after seeing it I must admit that it's a pretty good movie and I would like to see the sequel as well next year!
