Gears of War 4, better than the GoW trilogy?
I must admit that I didn't see Gears of War 4 coming, mostly because Gears of War 3 looked like a good ending for the series. But then there was Gears of War Judgement, a game that got a lot of hate, and I thought that was definitely the end for Gears of War. But now there is Gears of War 4 and we go back to our favourite grumpy gear Marcus Feniks, except this takes place a couple of decades later and Marcus is an old man and you play as his son JD.
The campaign is good?
The first thing I do in these type of games is play the campaign, because multiplayer can wait and horde mode will be there once I'm done with the campaign. But how good is the campaign? Well we go back to the one or two player campaign, instead of the four player campaign from the two previous Gears of War games, and you still can't pick your character which means that player one is JD and player two is Kait. This is actually not a bad thing but I think some people would rather pick their own character in the team instead of being forced to play as a certain character. The campaign is action packed and has some intense moments, also some drama and that actually fits well with the story because the game is pretty intense at certain points. But no matter what there is still humour, JD and his buddy Del will make jokes even when things look bad and that definitely makes things more fun to play. Once again you have five acts full of chapters, some acts are bigger than others, and it should keep you busy for a couple of days if you don't play the game like a madman!
Multiplayer is still fun?
Well yes and no. It's still the same type of multiplayer you're used to and new modes like dodgeball and arms race are fun but I did notice that multiplayer has some serious issues. I don't know if other people had the same issues but I often lag a bit at the start of each round of multiplayer and sometimes it takes forever for the game to load a match. This sucks! I hope these are just some small issues that can be fixed because otherwise it will be annoying to play multiplayer in my opinion. Multiplayer itself is fun and keeps things fast and violent, probably just the way you like it if you played Gears of War multiplayer before. The card system is a bit lame in my opinion, this works for both multiplayer and horde mode and gives you boosts, helps you unlock new characters and weapon skins. I wish this was more something that was based on your level, so with a certain level you unlock new characters or other items, but now you have to do that with card that you get out of certain boxes that you can buy with in game gold or pay for with real money. Once again I don't like this system but I guess it can't be avoided in this time.
Horde mode is back?
Yeah horde mode is back, but somehow it does feel a bit different. Now you have the fabricator, which lets you construct defensive items at the start of the round, and at the start of horde mode you and your team can move the fabricator to a place and set it down there and then the round stars. You can also place defensive items where you want to and that's very useful! You pay for all the fabricator items with power and you gain power by killing enemies during a wave, but you have to be quick to pick up the power because if you wait too long the power will disappear and you'll miss out on some power to upgrade or buy new items. You also have a class system that lets you play as different roles in the team, which is fun and gives you actually roles in the team. So as the sniper you get a sniper rifle and a marksman rifle so you go for the headshots and you can mark enemies, as the scout you are more mobile and your main focus is picking up power on the field, the soldier is a tough character and has better defense when he or she is in cover and there's also the engineer that can fix damaged defensive items. The game is fun to play and I will definitely recommend it but it's not exactly a great. So if you like Gears of War then this game won't disappoint you but for new players it might be a bit less fun.
