Succes in games, skill or luck?

It's easy to say you have skill in a game but isn't at least half of everything luck? I mean making that impossible shot isn't something you can practice on, that's just luck and no matter what someone would say about it you can't deny the fact that a lot of things that happen in a game are just pure luck. But it would be wrong to say that it's all luck, some people really do have skill and practice usually does make you better. The question, is succes in games based on skill or on luck?

You need skill for succes?

That's true, but having good team mates can help a lot too. For example when you play in a team based  game and you have great team mates then they can carry you to victory. Even when you're one of the worst players you can still win because others help you win. So skill isn't everything, but if you want to make it on your own then it's definitely a good thing to have. As unfair as it might seem some people have more skill or just have a better feeling for a game which makes them a bit better than the average player in that game. But practice does improve your chances and no matter how lucky someone might be, sooner or later his or her luck will run out and then it does come down to skill. Dodging a bullet is luck, being able to find an alternate route and surprise your attacker from behind will take skill. Luck can definitely help with succes in games but skill is usually the way to win and to be able to carry your own weight in a match.

Luck separates the average gamer from the expert gamer?

Sometimes it feels that way when you play multiplayer games, because players that are doing very well in a match usually have luck on their side. What that means is that a shot that should've killed them didn't or they just managed to get to cover to avoid the explosion or their team mates just showed up in time to help. If you want to be good at games then you need some luck, it's not all that there is but we all have some luck at certain moments in our life. Some call it bullshit but I think that luck definitely plays a role in your life and so also when you play games. Just luck at the 360 no scope nonsense, do you think you need skill for that? That's pure luck, because the chance to hit someone with that is very small and if you do manage to hit someone then I'd say that has more to do with luck than with skill. Of course you can practice but certain things are so random that you find a stronger ally in luck than in skill. It's this luck that separates sometimes average gamers from the great gamers, these are the type of players that always seem to have lucky moments and just seem to survive. It's frustrating to other players but unfortunately this happens.

So what's better, skill or luck?

If you want a safe bet then I'd say it's better to have skill than luck. Mostly because luck isn't something you can really rely on. It's not that you can call on luck and it will help you in the game. But skill can help you in difficult situations and also help you survive when things are looking bad. Luck is something positive that can happen in a game, but at the same time you can play for days and get none of that. Things just go wrong and no matter what you do it doesn't change. Wouldn't you rather have skill at those times than luck? But I don't want to dismiss luck, there have been a lot of times that luck has saved my life and that I did better in a game thanks to luck. So I'm happy when I get lucky in a game, but skill is really something that is more reliable. But no matter how skilled you are, when someone else gets lucky then all that skill means nothing. I do believe that skill will increase your chances for succes, but getting a little bit of luck every now and then definitely helps!
