Expiration date on games?

Ignoring the material of the disc I'd say that games do have an expiration date, because sometimes games are so old that it's just so lame to get back into the old graphics and controls. But there are also exceptions, games that are always fun to play no matter how old they are. The question is, what makes a game special? Usually there's certain factors that play a big role, for example personal experience and nostalgia that can make a game fun to play even twenty or thirty years later.

Games have an expiration date?

I know that this sounds dumb but hear me out! Of course you can play games whenever you want, as long as the game itself is in good condition and you still have the console you need to play it then there shouldn't be a problem. But how many people actually plug in their NES to play NES games? I don't think that there are a lot of people that are interested in that! But it's not that odd though, because some games are ageless and they're fun to play. For example Ducktales on the NES is a lot of fun to play, it's not a surprise that you got a remastered version on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. But more recent games like Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic or Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines are classics in their own way. Eventhough the graphics look like shit (compared to what you have now) they're still fun games to play. Unfortunately not every game has this special status, some games you just want to forget and age really fast. I'm not going to throw any games here under the bus but I think we all know games that we want to forget and that have been forgotten by most people. These are games with an expiration date, games you want to forget and most likely will forget eventually.

Remakes and remastered games bring new life to old games?

Absolutely! I'm not saying this is always a succes but if done correctly you should be in for a lot of fun! New players can also discover older games, because it's rough to go to a N64 or Playstation when you grew up with the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3. So it's a good thing that certain games get a second chance in a polished version or in a totally new version. For example Resident Evil has a brilliant remake and Final Fantasy VII will have an amazing looking remake as well. Sometimes it takes time but it's worth waiting for. Thanks to remakes and remastered games the old games get a new chance and their expiration date is prolonged. Maybe one day every game will have to disappear eventually, even some of the classics but for as long as you keep them in your memory and play them they'll never truly disappear!
