Competitive multiplayer: the good, the bad and the ugly
Playing games on your own is fun, but sometimes you get this feeling that you want to play games with other people. These people can be your friends or you can play with or against strangers. It seems like a lot of fun but competitive multiplayer isn't just all fun, there is also a darker side to it that makes you want to punch your tv and throw your computer or console out of the window!
The good.
What I like about competitive multiplayer is working together with people in a team so you can beat another team of people. It's best when you communicate but even if you don't communicate you can sometimes have some amazing multiplayer matches. This is something you don't experience when you play only single player games. Sure it's fun to play single player games but getting a quadruple kill and then taunting the players you just killed isn't something that feels that great in a single player game. I feel a bigger sense of satisfaction when I win in multiplayer matches against other people than against a team of computer controlled opponents. Sure you can raise the difficulty of the AI but facing other people is often a bigger challenge because sometimes people can be quite unpredictable and that is much more fun to play against than the often predictable computer controlled opponents. Playing with and/or against other people is also a way of making new friends, which is also a good thing. Not everyone will be nice but with mutual respect you can make some new friends and form strong teams.
The bad.
Unfortunately competitive multiplayer brings out a lot of bad things as well, not just the try hards but also the cheaters. People that are so desperate to win that they will do anything to win, which pretty much ruins the game for other people that play fair. Another bad thing is that some people are really unfriendly in competitive multiplayer, not just people on the other team but also people on your own team can sometimes be loud and annoying. They will often blame others for their own mistakes and won't give support when others need it and scream bloody murder when they need help and expect people to be there instantly. What's worse if you get people in your team that are so obsessed with their k/d rating that they completely ignore the objective and that often leads to defeat. But also people that refuse to communicate with you or even bother to listen to you will make bad team mates, because communication is often a good way to win or at least stand a chance against well organized teams.
The ugly.
What's bad can always turn ugly, just look at how some people respond to eachother. Some immature people wish others cancer or want you to die horribly just because your team lost or because they were killed by the same guy. Tension can run high in competitive multiplayer and it will sometimes bring out the ugly side in people. I'm not pretending that I never said anything bad, some people can be really annoying and it's easy to slip into an ugly asshole that insults and hates anyone that stands in the way. Unfortunately this ugly side is also a part of competitive multiplayer, but it's not a professional side of competitive multiplayer. I'm not saying that professional players are such decent people, but it's often not tolerated in a tournament to be this volatile towards other players. It's better to focus your anger and frustration on the match itself and try to do better. But you should always remember that there are better players than you out there, it sucks to admit it but it's true.
