Games affect you more than you know?

I don't think most gamers realize how much they can be affected by games. Now let me immediately say that I don't think that games make you agressive or hostile towards others, but I do think that they can make you happy or sometimes sad. For example when you play a game with an interesting story and characters that you care for then it matters to you what happens to these characters. So when one of the characters dies you're sad and when they're having fun together you're having fun. But how far do these feelings go and are the affects dangerous?

There's nothing wrong with caring about the characters?

I don't think so, I actually think it's natural to feel that way. To care about characters in a game you like to play, because they're a part of the world you play in and that makes it also a part of you in a way. So it's only natural to care about some characters. I doubt anyone wants to see characters he or she cares about die, but sometimes it happens and that can have a big impact on you. If you're lucky this happened early in the game, that way you didn't get too attached but at the same time a negative moment in a game can awaken some bad memories. So caring about characters in a game isn't a bad thing, but you should always realize that it's just a game and not real.

Games can make you depressed?

I've had moments in games that I felt terrible, moments that I had to stop for some time because I just felt like someone stabbed you in your heart. For example In Dragon Age: Origins when you play as the human noble and Arle Howe kills your family, that's rough and makes you feel miserable and also drives your need to get justice or I guess you could say revenge. Then there's the game Lost Odyssey where there is a moment you meet an ill woman and find out she's the daughter of the main character and dying, that's a moment where your heart is being torn from your chest and into pieces. Man that made me feel terrible and definitely made me stop for a moment because I was crying. I can understand that some people get depressed from certain games, maybe these people feel too strongly about the characters and the story in the game but that's not really a bad thing. But you should be careful and as I mentioned before you should always realize that it's just a game. It's also a good thing to take a break every now and then, just to keep in touch with the real world and not lose yourself into the fantasy world in the game.
