It doesn't matter if you play as a man or woman in a game?

In my early days of gaming I absolutely didn't want to play as female characters, in those days it didn't happen a lot that you had female playable characters but if they showed up in a game I would never play as one of them. So Chun-Li in Street Fighter and Princess Peach in Super Mario Bros 2 are characters I avoided as much as possible. But as you get older these things become less important and you come to the realization that it doesn't really matter if you play as a man or as a woman in a game, it's about having fun in a game!

Mature players don't care about the playable characters?

I wouldn't say that, because you would most likely care about the playable character wether you're a mature player or not. Who would want to play as a character that looks dumb, is annoying or has this awful voice in the game that makes you want to turn off the tv? So the playable characters are important, but I don't think people would make a big deal out of it if the main character is a male or a female. But there are situations that it does become a problem. For example if suddenly in the next Metal Gear Solid game you play as a woman instead of Snake, I wonder how the fans will react to that. But the opposite can be said as well, for example with the Metroid games when instead of Samus you play as a guy. I can imagine that a lot of fans might not be happy with that. So iconic characters aren't to be messed with, but in certain games you could have a male or female main character and people would most likely not care about it that much. Wether they are mature or not, I think most gamers care more about the game then the fact they play as a male or female character.

It's better if you choose the gender for your character?

It would solve a lot of bickering, instead of people whining about something as silly as this you could just make your own character and that should fix that problem. Unfortunately this doesn't work in every game, for example in the Legend of Zelda games it would be a bit weird to create your own Link and eventhough Linkle exists I think most people prefer playing as Link because he's once again an iconic character. But in games like Dragon Age: Origins and Inquisition, the Mass Effect trilogy and the Saints Row games it's actually a good thing that you can choose the gender for your character. Not that the conversations in the game will change that much but if you're one of those people that prefers to look at the butt of a woman the entire time then it's nice that you have that option. I guess Saints Row really gives you a lot of freedom where you can change between being a man and a woman as many time as you want while playing the game, there are even achievements in Saints Row the Third and Saints Row IV if you play as both gender for a couple of hours. I like freedom in games and having the option to choose your gender is a good thing, I'm glad that Call of Duty Black Ops 3 also introduced that in the campaign.

Do women really want to play as women in games?

You would probably expect to get a yes on that question but did you know that some women don't care? Women that play CoD, Battlefield and Halo are used to play as men, so eventhough there is now an option to play as women in multiplayer it doesn't change the fact that it's a first person shooter and gender doesn't really matter in these games. But when you look at third person shooters, platform games and role playing games then you can see your character and maybe then the appearance and gender of their character becomes more important to some people. But there are also women that like to hide the fact that they're women, they will play under a male gamertag and pick male characters (eventhough there is an option to play as female characters) just to avoid unwanted attention. But there are also people that really prefer to play as women in games. This could be women but sometimes there are also guys that prefer to play as women. Then there are also the transsexual and transgender gamers that probably prefer to play as a certain gender, so I can understand that some people really don't care and for others it's really important that they can pick their gender in a game. Does it really matter? I guess not, because it's just a game. But for some people a game is more than just a game, so I would like to add that everyone plays games on their own way and I don't think there is anything wrong with that!
