Sinful Sunday: Pretending to be someone you're not
I think a lot of people sometimes wish they were someone else, maybe not completely someone else but that they would be braver, stronger, smarter or faster. But there are also people that wish they would be a celebrity, not just any celebrity but a certain celebrity and that can sometimes lead to quite extreme actions. For example people that not just dress and act like a certain celebrity, they even have cosmetic surgery so they look even more like their favourite celebrity. But these are just a few examples of people that pretend to be someone they're not. When you play games you sometimes also deal with pretenders, but these are usually a bit less extreme.
What kind of pretenders do you meet online?
Well there are those that pretend to be someone they're not, for example a woman (sometimes this can also be a man) that pretends to be someone else and has also pictures of the person they pretend to be. But in fact this person is someone else and they just pretend to be this person. This is something you should be careful of, especially on dating sites. It doesn't mean you should question every message you get from a woman online but you should always be careful. If you're going to meet then meet in a public place and if someone wants money then the answer is always no. There are also gamers, often men, that play on an account that looks like it's the account of a woman. For example this person could have the gamertag Miss Major Missy (I don't know if this actually exists) and pretend to be a woman. But the thing is that there are also transgender gamers and then it makes a bit more sense, so they might sound like a guy and perhaps even still look like a guy but in truth they're women who were born in the wrong body. I don't go into details here but you can understand that this can lead to confusion and I don't think that these people are pretenders, they are often misunderstood.
Why do people pretend to be someone they're not?
Some peopel are unhappy with who they are and so they make up someone and pretend to be that person to make their life a bit more interesting. Then there are people that have ill intentions and want to hurt other people, they pretend to like someone and will flirt with that person but never have the intention to actually meet that person because that would reveal that they're not the person they say they are. I don't think that everyone really wants to hurt other people, some people are just happier with their fake identity and use that to escape their own miserable life. So I can understand why they do it, but they will often hurt other people that want to be their friends or more with their lies. When you play games and meet other people it's often easy to become friends, but you hardly ever truly know the other people unless you actually take the time to get to know them. I wonder how many people will still be friends after that when you get to know the person behind the gamertag. But not everyone takes the time to get to know people and some people just add others after having played on or two rounds together on a team. It's easy for pretenders to slip into your life that way and who knows who this person is in your friends list. I guess most people don't really care, because a lot of people don't take the time to talk with others anymore. It's a shame but not really a surprise, I guess that's the type of world we live in now. You're always online and most of the time anonymous to those around you...
