Survival games, realistic or not?
When it comes to survival games then you often have two types of gamers, you have people that want realism and there are people that prefer to go crazy with fantasy influences. I guess both sides of survival games offer an interesting way of playing it but I doubt that survival games with a lot of unrealistic elements are much of a challenge when you compare them to realistic survival games. So what do you think, do you prefer a realistic survival game or not?
I must admit that I like a bit of realism, but not up to the point where that dominates the gameplay. I don´t want to find water every hour and spend too much time on planning. Sometimes I just want to hack and slash, which means that I prefer to look for games that offer you a chance to do more than just find resources. When you look at a game like Fallout New Vegas you have an option to go for realism, which means that the game is suddenly ten times more difficult and that it´s not just about killing enemies anymore. Staying alive isn´t always that easy in games, even when your job is just to kill enemies. But to add the extra challenge of taking care of yourself makes it more interesting for some people.
My favourite type of survival games are survival horror games, I don´t even care if it´s realistic or not. It sometimes forces you to face your own fears and you become stronger for it, at least if you dare to keep playing the game! So in a way this also helps you and not just your gamerscore or trophies list. I´m not saying that playing survival games helps you prepare for anything, unless you expect a zombie apocalypse, but it´s fun and sometimes also a bit of a challenge. Especially games that don´t show monsters all the time but instead mess with your mind and have some jump scares in them can be a good way to become a stronger person out of that. Of course you don´t have to go through that, I mean you should play what you like and not what makes you cool or more interesting.
I´m curious to see more survival games based on teamwork, because when things go bad it´s a good thing to work together instead of killing eachother. I think games could stimulate that a bit more, especially when it´s done right. At this time you´re often on your own and eventhough in some situations that´s more fun I would like to see some more efforts when it comes to teamwork to survive. It´s not always about killing eachother, unless you like to play free for all in a first person shooter...
