Sinful Sunday: The price of winning
When I play a game I like to win, sometimes it´s almost an obsession that I must win. Which means when I lose or something goes wrong that I´m upset, that sometimes leads to rage and that´s never a good thing. It´s weird how winning a game can mean the world to you, at least in that moment. But is it really that important?
For me it´s always there, the need to win. Sometimes it´s a bit stronger than other times but the need to win is always there, I think I´ve only let someone win once in my life and already regretted that decision. Not that I didn´t want her to win, but she never shut up about it anymore. So I did learn that a victory has to be earned, never give it away just like that! But do you have to be serious about it? I guess not, because when you play with friends then having fun should be more important than winning. But what if winning a game is your idea of fun? Then I´d say you better buckle up because when you play competitive games you´re going to lose sooner or later!
But it´s not just when I play against other people that I have the feeling that I must win, it´s also when I´m playing a single player game and I have to get through a level or beat a boss that I have this need to win/succeed. Failure is met with anger, which then makes it even more difficult to win. I guess that really makes me my own worst enemy. Which is why I´m trying to let go of this need to win, because when you suffer because of this need then it´s not a good thing. Maybe if it´s just a motivation to do better than I don´t see the danger in it but if it´s self desructive then you might want to think about it.
I´ve had moments where I hit myself, bite my own hands or even ram my head against the wall just to punish myself for failing. Of course that´s stupid, but when you´re angry you don´t really see reason anymore. Which is why I try to have fun and give up on winning, at least for the majority of my gaming experience. There are of course moments these old feelings of the need to win rise once more, but I try to keep that under control.
The price of winning can be quite high, it can cost you friends and sometimes even your girlfriend. Maybe you don´t care about that and winning is really all you care about, I guess as long as you win you don´t notice what you´ve lost but there comes a time that you´ll lose and you´ll realize what you´ve lost. Remember that a game is for fun and not to ruin your life with the obsession to win. Because what does a victory mean if there is no one left to share it with?
