Looking back at.....Kessen 2!

So maybe you´re wondering, what´s Kessen 2 or maybe you´ve never heard of the first game as well? Kessen is a strategy game, you´re the commander that decides where troops move and you can give the instructions what to do and who to attack. It seems simple and in a way it is, the trick is that preparation is the key to victory. One of the characters in the game even says this: "those that fail to plan, plan to fail!" This makes this game interesting for everyone that likes to focus more on actual strategy than hack and slash.

What about the story? The story takes place in China about two thousand years ago, which keeps things a bit more simple without the bombs and all that type of nonsense! You play as Liu Bei and you have to defeat Cao Cao, this game follows the story of the three kingdoms but puts a romantic twist on it where Cao Cao has kidnapped the girlfriend of Liu Bei and you have to rescue her. The big twist is that when you finally defeat him that you get a vision and suddenly you´re back at the start of the game again but now you play as Cao Cao. Yes it probably sounds a bit weird but it´s actually a fun game, it gives you the chance to play on both sides and it´s up to you to decide who´s right. The story might not be the best one but it´s definately entertaining, with some humour and interesting characters.

So you sit on your mighty throne as your armies fight? Well not exactly, because you can zoom in on the battle and take control of the general of that army and fight yourself. This doesn´t actually damage the enemy soldier a lot but it´s better than to look from a distance. Also you can activate special abilities of a general to do some serious damage to the other army. Usually it´s these tactics that help you win the battle, eventhough it definately helps if you pick a good strategy before you start the battle. You can actually choose different strategies and it´s up to you to pick one, if you pick one that´s not easy then you make the battle tougher on yourself. So it´s smart to think before you pick one, also it won´t really affect the story if you pick another strategy.

Why should you play this game? If you like strategy and you don´t take everything that serious then this is a fun game for you. It´s from Koei and you probably know them from the Dynasty and Samurai Warriors games. Their games aren´t difficult and fun is definitely more important than making a challenge, but that´s quite alright because games are meant to be fun and not frustrating! After Kessen 2 there was a sequel Kessen 3 but this one takes place in Japan and you play as Nobunaga Oda. This game is also more arcade style hack and slash, which is a shame but it´s still fun to play.
