Looking back at.....the Battle of Olympus! (NES)

Of all the games I´ve ever played this is probably my favourite, which might surprise you but it´s probably more for sentimental reasons than actual gameplay. But that doesn´t make this a bad game, for the time this was the type of game you´d play if you´re into action/adventure, it´s simple and yet detailed enough to keep yourself busy for a lot of hours! The Greek mythology theme definately made it more interesting as well, but let´s not forget that this was the first game for me where I could name the main character which gave me a closer connection with this character.

So what´s so great about this game? With my love for Greek mythology and playing action/adventure games I already have enough reason to like it, but it´s the story where you fight your way through legends and myths that makes you feel like you´re one of the ancient heroes yourself. You gain more powers by doing tasts for the gods and goddesses in the game, sometimes it can take some time to complete such a task but it´s often worth it! I´d say for everyone that likes Greek mythology this game gives you a lot of characters that you´ll probably recognize, it´s a lot of fun to be a part of that mythological world. But let´s not forget that you have to save a princess, so it´s not like you´re just taking a stroll through ancient Greece!

The mythological creatures also give you the idea that you´re a hero, for example beating the hydra is something you´d be proud of eventhough it´s not even the most difficult boss in the game. At first you have to fight for your life, as you have only a sword and shield of poor quality, but the further you get into the game and the more tasks you complete for the Greek gods they´ll give you knew magical items to enhance your powers. For example sandals that let you walk on the ceiling, an ocarina that calls for a dolphin to help you cross the sea and a sword that can shoot lightning bolts. It´s just a small taste of what to expect in this game.

I know that the graphics look horrible compared to any action/adventure game you can buy now in the story, but this was what gamers played to enjoy a nice adventure in a 2D landscape. I really wish they would remake this game or something like it and yes I know that God of War comes close but that game never gave me the feeling of being back into the Battle of Olympus. It´s a lot of fun to play action adventure games and eventhough they´ve changed a lot over the years that doesn´t mean I don´t look back with fond memories of playing those old games!
