Random stranger, friend or foe?

I´ve talked about it before but I want to go back to this subject because it seems this becomes more and more relevant as we play online games more than a decade ago. Especially since a lot of games have multiplayer or only have multiplayer, which means that you´ll often meet random strangers. But who are these people?

Gamers aren´t all the same? Well if you haven´t figured that out by now then you haven´t been playing online for a long time, because gamers aren´t just one group that sums everyone up! You have different types of people in the world and it´s the same when it comes to gamers, sure you´d call people gamers when they enjoy playing games but that doesn´t make them all the same! Even the motivation to play games can be different, because some would play to win while others just play for fun. Either way your motivation drives you and hopefully leads to a fun experience both online and offline. The problem with online is that you never know who you encounter and sometimes (more often than not) people don´t always get along.

For example in competitive online multiplayer you´ll find a lot of negativity, because a lot of people want to win but only a few (and sometimes only one) can win. This means that there will be disappointment, anger, frustration and irritation among the losers. Of course not everyone is like that, but I can definitely understand that you´re not always happy with the outcome or by something that happens online. In first person shooters you´ll often hear people lose their shit when they claim they hit someone so many time or at close range with a shotgun and the other player didn´t die and instead killed them with one shot. It´s harsh to survive in such an environment, which is why a lot of people prefer not to play competitive multiplayer because there aren´t many friendly players there.

But what about cooperative online multiplayer? You´d think that this would be better but that´s not true, I´m not saying that it´s all bad but in a lot of games you´ll encounter people that find it funny to work against you than with you. But then there are also people that play these type of games but have no idea how to work with others, which then leads to frustration on both sides.

So it´s not a good idea to play games with random strangers? I wouldn´t go that far, sometimes you do meet friendly people or people that really just want to have a good time playing games with others. It´s just a shame that this is a minority in the gaming community, which means that you´re often better off playing with friends or try your luck in online meeting places to form teams in games. If you do feel like playing with random strangers, especially in competitive online multiplayer, then you might want to play without your headset unless you enjoy hearing what people say when they´re angry.
