What makes you want to buy and play a certain game?

With so many games coming out in a year and not enough time and money to play them all you often have to make choices which games you're going to play and which games you're not going to play. Some people reserve their money for the triple A games and there are some that are waiting for some sales and then buy a lot of games for a cheap price. But what makes you want to buy a game? Is it just the price or are you actually looking at what the game has to offer? Let's take a closer look at some of the motivations people have for buying a game.

As long as the price is right?

When a game is super cheap, in my opinion that is below ten Dollar or Euros, then it becomes very tempting to buy a game. Even if you're not completely certain about a game you probably don't want to miss out on this cheap bargain and would want to buy the game. I did that with Shadow of Mordor, the game was only six Euros so I couldn't help but take a chance with that, and it was a good deal for a fun game. But usually there is more to it for me than just the price, sure it's nice when a game is cheap but you do want to get some information about a game first unless you have a lot of faith in the developers. But I think a lot of Mass Effect fans got slapped in the face with Mass Effect Andromeda when that game had a lot of issues at first and that shows that you should never just blindly put your trust into something without first checking it out. No matter how good things look you should do a bit of research into a game to figure out if you're actually going to like it or not. Of course it's tempting to buy a game for a cheap price, but you would want to be certain about the game you're going to buy and not buy a game you might regret buying later. As I mentioned before not everyone has enough money to buy all the games he or she wants to buy, so sometimes you have to make choices and it's nice when you make the right choices!

It needs to be a certain type of game?

Some people really stick to a certain genre, for example some people really enjoy first person shooters and when you look at their game history then you can see that most of the games they've played are first person shooters. I personally like to switch it up a bit, play different genres and do different things but there is nothing wrong with sticking to something you like. This makes playing the games you want to play also a bit easier, because if you're only interested in one type of game then you can ignore a lot of other games. But at the same time you might be missing out on some really fun games, so I guess it's not for everyone unless you truly don't care about anything else but the one type of game you always play. If that one genre you love is for example survival horror then you might be having a hard time because there aren't a lot of survival horror games launching in a year and definitely not a lot that are also fun to play or worth buying. So it's not a bad idea to branch out to other genres, but then money and time can make it harder to play all the games you might be interested in. So maybe try to find some genres that you want to stick to and ignore the other genres. I can see that working for some people. For example someone will only be interesting in first person shooters, third person shooter and survival horror games. You should have several games to choose from without being overwhelmed.

A game needs to 'convince' you?

There is also another way of looking at games, if a game doesn't really interest you that much then why should you buy it? A game needs to interest you or at least become interesting for you to become curious about the game. The more you learn or the more you discover about the game the more interested you might become. But the game needs to offer you something you're interested in. For example this could be good graphics, a wide open world adventure, good voice acting or an amazing story. Of course it can also be a combination of all the things I just mentioned. Just pretty screenshots isn't going to convince me, I want to be able to enjoy the game and not be done in a day or two. That's not worth sixty Dollars or Euros! A game needs to be a bit challenging but you don't want it to be that difficult that you're stuck or need to look up online how to proceed every twenty minutes. We're not all the same and so we're probably all interested in (slightly) different games. But that doesn't mean we can't all like the same games. But sometimes we like certain games for different reasons. Whatever the reason might be for you we end up buying the game and hopefully all enjoy it as well. Sometimes games don't need to be convincing, just the sight of some gameplay or a cool cinematic can be enough to convince you. I know that's what happened to me when I first saw Fallout 4, that games looked so amazing and had everything I was looking for in a game so of course I immediately pre-ordered it. Sometimes it can be that simple and sometimes it takes a lot to convince me to buy a game. It really just depends on the person and the game.
