Sea of Thieves beta, the multiplayer experience!
When you play Sea of Thieves on your own you're in for adventure and fun, but the game comes truly to life when you play with others. The game is pretty much meant to be played this way. So I joined the big crews, a total of four players on a ship, and you sail on the biggest ship in the game. That is pretty much the same as the small ship but things are more based on working together instead of you doing everything on your own. On the big ship you need to communicate and work together or else you're in trouble!
Communication is key!
When I first joined multiplayer I joined a crew of three people and I was the fourth, but the problem was that nobody talked and nobody even used the in game chat select system which at least offers some sort of communication to anyone that doesn't have a mic. So we were just floating around on the sea with a crew that didn't do anything and we also had no quest. Not a great start of my multiplayer experience. After a couple of minutes they all left and I was alone on the ship, so I took the ship to the starter island, Ancient Spire, and I was picking up a mission while waiting for new people to join. That didn't take that long because while on the island two new players joined. One did have a mic and the other didn't. The guy with the mic was even playing on PC, which is a nice feature in this game because Xbox One players can join a crew with PC gamers and it worked pretty good. We did my mission, they didn't have a mission, and sailed to an island for three treasure maps. While sailing there we communicated constantly. The PC player was steering while I was in the map room telling him which direction he needed to go. Since the guy without a mic was doing nothing I also went up several times to help the PC player with evading rocks because the big sail is blocking most of the sight so it's risky to do that all on your own! Our communication became a bit more difficult during a storm, the thunder made so much noise that it was difficult to hear eachother but we managed to reach the island without crashing into anything so that was definitely a victory for us. On the island I went together with the PC player on a treasure hunt and we communicated to determine where the treasure would be. The map helps but you still need to figure out in the game world where that point is exactly. He didn't know what the map button is on PC so I showed him my map to help him find the spot. There were three chests on the island so that kept us busy for some time. It was a fun experience and also a useful experience because when skeletons show up you can work together to destroy them and it's also useful to have someone protecting you while carrying the chest. The guy without a mic eventually left without doing anything, which was a loss for him because he missed out on a lot of fun and a nice gold reward. So yeah it pays off to communicate and use your mic!
Bigger rewards!
What I noticed in multiplayer is that I got more treasure chests, I can't say for certain but I get the idea that you get more chests when you play with more people. We were a crew of three when we started the mission so maybe that's why we got three chests instead of just one on the island. If that's true then it definitely pays off to work together because you all get the same amount of gold for each chest so playing in a full crew of four gets you four times as much gold and four times as much experience with that faction. So is it worth playing with others? Yeah I definitely think so! It also helps when you're in a big crew on a big ship, this will scare away a lot of other players that are in a small ship or in the medium ship. If you do encounter another full crew on a big ship then you at least stand a fighting chance with your full crew. As long as everyone is helping and knows what he or she is doing. Two other console players joined after we dug up the third chest and eventhough they didn't help with digging up the chests they still got the gold reward for being part of the crew. That was luck on their part but it doesn't bother me, we all get our own share of gold and nobody gets cheated out of it. Besides we were a crew of four at that point so it made us stronger and I definitely like that!
Multiplayer is more intense!
If you thought the one vs one fights are intense then you've never experienced the four vs four battles in Sea of Thieves, that is truly something cool! Our two new crew members were eager for a fight and had trouble finding other players earlier so with our full crew of four we went out searching for other players and it didn't take long for us to find a big ship! To our surprise the big ship was chasing a small ship, which they considered as an easy kill. But then we showed up and shot the shit out of their ship. One of the crew even launched himself with the canon towards them but he missed and landed in the water, which made us all laugh a lot. I would talk shit because before that I jumped on the ship and suddenly I was in the water as well, so it's good that there are mermaids or mermen to help you get back to your ship. It takes a moment for these creatures to spawn but you can't miss them with their bright torches. You do want to get out of the water quickly because if you stay in the water too long sharks will show up and they can kill you with two hits if you're at full health! You can kill the sharks but I would not encourage that too much because when I did that with my crew only more sharks showed up. I think towards the end we had five sharks attacking us! Going back to the battle. So we kept loading up the canons and shooting the other ship, they returned fire and at that point you need at least two people on fixing duty. One to board up the holes and the other to scoop out the water. That might seem boring in a battle but if you don't do it your ship will sink and you're done! Then that awkward moment happened were we ran out of canonballs. Yeah I know not very professional. So I jumped with my crew on the other ship and beat them with sword fights and by shooting them with our pistols and rifles. When they were all dead I quickly grabbed the steering wheel and made their ship crash on the rocks which did a lot of damage to their ship! Unfortunately the crew just spawned back on the ship and they killed my character. You then go to the vessel of the damned, a Davy Jones type of captain is on that ship and after some time you can go back to the world of the living. It's a cool spot where you can meet other pirates that got killed in the game. We managed to beat the other crew but our ship also took a lot of damage in the fight and we ran out of supplies to repair it all. Which meant our ship also sunk. That was a shame but it was still a cool adventure and to imagine that this was all with people I never met before. Now that's pretty cool!
Should you play single player or multiplayer?
That's really up to you, but I would suggest to go for single player if you have no friends playing in this game and get familiar with the game first a bit. It's a big help if you know what you're doing when you play with others. It definitely helps things along if you don't need someone to hold your hand with everything you're doing. Once you're familiar with the game you can jump into multiplayer and hopefully you get a fun crew to play with. So far I have to say that the game is really surprising me and I mean that in a good way. Of course not everyone is always friendly, I heard stories of other players that steal the ship and abandon their crew or people that deliberately crash the ship. Unfortunately these people exist and if they truly are trolling like that then you can always lock them up in the cell on the ship. You just need to vote as a crew for this person to end up in the cell. Then this person can learn to behave or he or she can fuck off. Unfortunately people could also absue this voting system and vote random people into the cell, I haven't seen that happen but it wouldn't surprise me that this happens. Right now multiplayer feels fresh and fun, something I'm definitely enjoying! Let's just hope it stays that way for a long time! The beta is extended till the 31st on Wednesday so I hope you have so fun and interesting pirate adventures!
