I hate Monday: I hate loot boxes!
Is there anything more hated than loot boxes in 2017? I think that it started small, in some games as a new reward system but more and more games need to have this system because it will slowly drain you of more money. Of course you don't have to pay for them but if you really want the cool stuff in the game you like to play then you better pay up real money because the currency in the game is often not the way to pay for those loot boxes. Is it so weird that I hate these loot boxes? Maybe it is but I doubt I'm the only one!
Invasion of the loot boxes?
It certainly looks that way! What's worse is that Xboxlive live with the achievements will be changed and there are rumors that there will also be a loot box system with that involved. Just when I try to defend Microsoft with their system they're planning something dumb like that. It's cool if you can unlock new things but why do we need loot boxes for that? Oh right so suckers can pay real money to get rewards. I mean why even call it an achievement at that point? It's more a who pays the most to get a certain reward type of system. I guess you could give an achievement for being the biggest moron who spends a lot of money on that. But I talk big now but I'll probably be dumb enough myself to spend money on that as well because when I see something I really like then I really want it and the system plays on those impulses quite well. It's not a surprise that more and more games have a loot box reward system because it a great way to give people something, not always what they want, and the developers get extra money. So in a way everyone wins, yeah right...
Why do you hate loot boxes so much?
Because they're bullshit! Oh look I get a loot box and guess what's in it? Right, it's the same old crap I've been getting for the last fifty other boxes. You hardly ever get something good and when you get something good then it's hardly ever what you really want. That's the big problem with loot boxes, there's not guarantee to get what you want and that means that you could end up never getting the item or items you really want in that game. So a sucker would keep paying and keep playing but honestly do you think that's worth it? Loot boxes are gamble boxes, there is no guarantee that you win or in this case get what you want and I'd say nine out of ten times it's not even a good item. Just some dumb sticker, ugly ass skin for your character or weapon, a consumable item that isn't really that useful or something else that you don't want. These gamble boxes are very unrewarding and not fun at all! Just think of you opening fifty boxes and just end up getting maybe one or two useful items from that and there's a good chance that you never got the item you wanted. In Fortnite I have opened over a hundred loot llamas and did I ever get the legendary hero that I wanted? Nope! I didn't get the legendary weapon I wanted nor the legendary trap I wanted. Do you know what I keep getting? Grey, green and sometimes blue items that are not that useful and require you to level up several times to have it on equal strength as the epic (purple) or legendary (orange) items. I wish that they just kept the gold system active from the Winter event, that you can earn a currency in the game and buy the things you want with that in the shop. This way people play the game, developers happy, and people get what they want, players happy, so we all win. But I guess developers don't earn any extra money with that so I guess we'll not do that. Let's just stick to those stupid gamble boxes because there is always a sucker that is willing to pay. Sigh...
Not all loot boxes are evil?
I think that Overwatch is one of the few games that handles loot boxes without too much bullshit. They weren't that good from the start but with all the updates in the games they've become more stable and reliable. Every time you level up you earn a loot box and you can earn three bonus loot boxes if you win nine arcade matches. So you don't have to pay them to get them or play a ridiculous amount of matches to earn one loot box. On top of that you are more likely to get an item you don't have, unless you have unlocked so many items that there is literally nothing new to give you. This prevents the duplicate bullshit that is very annoying to say the least! This increases the chances on getting an item you really want because it's something you don't have and espcially during an event that increases your chances even more because at least one item of each loot box is an event item. There are still no guarantees that you get what you want but at least you have a pretty good chance to get something new and hopefully something good. I would also like to mention that Overwatch loot boxes only contain cosmetic items, so nothing gives you a benefit over another player unless your new skin or emote will stun the opponent with its beauty.
No more loot boxes?
After the Star Wars Battlefront 2 disaster I can see developers think twice before putting loot boxes in their game, but I doubt that it's going to stop the loot boxes from entering future games. It's just too rewarding for the developers to leave it out at this point. I honestly don't care that much that they're in a game but at least make it a rewarding loot box, if you hardly ever get something good then what's the point? Also make certain that what you give to players doesn't change the gameplay in multiplayer. If loot boxes contain items that can give players a benefit in multiplayer then that's bad, I think EA knows all about that now from all the people that bought Star Wars Battlefront 2. I would prefer that loot boxes would be removed from games and that you can just earn rewards or have a currency in the game that you can earn with doing things in the game and that this gets you acces to certain rewards. People want to be able to earn something and not test their luck on a gamble box because the chance of getting what you want is going to be very small! But can you stop the corporate greed? I doubt it, but maybe if we just stick together and not keep paying for those gamble boxes then perhaps we can stop it before every game has these gamble boxes and games turn more and more into online casinos.
