Metal Gear Survive, is it worth checking out?
Has there ever been a game that got more hate when it was announced than Metal Gear Survive? I can't say for certain but I doubt that there could be another game that is so hated at the moment. But is Metal Gear Survive really such a terrible game? Well not really, I mean it's not amazing but it definitely has some fun moments and if you have a group of friends to play with then this game can be fun to play. For solo players it's a bit less fun in my opinion. So should you check this game out? Well the open beta is live now, till the 21st of January, so if you want to check the game out then now is the time to do with for free!
Things I like about Metal Gear Survive.
I like the gameplay a lot, it's pretty much like Metal Gear Solid 5 but with some extra abilities. For example now you can craft items that you can use to defend or protect yourself. For example fences to keep the wanderers (it's how they call the zombie type monsters in this game) out or a turret to mow down enemies without them getting close to you. I also like the sneak options, eventhough in certain moments it feels very useless. Another thing I really like is the gathering of items that you can use to craft with. This reminds me a lot of Fallout 4 where you could pick up almost everything and use it to craft things with. The combat is ok, not amazing but you can definitely get things done with the guns and the melee weapons are good in one on one fights but against groups of enemies not so much. I like the open world approach, to go where you want to go and pick your own missions. The character customization is also pretty cool, but I wish they had more options with that. Perhaps in the full game you get that because right now with just four hairstyles to choose from it feels like most characters are going to look identical.
Things I don't like about Metal Gear Survive.
Getting back to the combat I really don't like how weak you are and how tough some enemies are. A bomber will laugh at your melee attacks and unless you hit him in the legs and manage to dodge his knockdown attack you would do well to stick to guns against these enemies. Groups of enemies are also a problem when you don't have a fence to hide behind. They can easily surround you and you take massive damage with each hit. Then there are status effects that make recovery impossible unless you do some healing that takes you to a menu which is really unpleasant when you or the objective is under attack. Weapons only have a handful of ammo with it, so that means they only last for a very short time and crafting bullets is about as lame as you can imagine it. If you don't have the right resources you get no extra bullets. Items you can use against the wanderers are also quite weak when you look at durability. The Metal Gear walkers, I think that's the name of those machines, only last a short time and then they will break down and explode. The mission you get to play in the beta is designed for multiple people, so playing it solo will be an unpleasant experience unless you come well prepared and know exactly what you need to do and event then things can get ugly! I honestly don't like escort or protect the objective missions, so this wasn't a great introduction to the game for me. I also don't like how the game pretty much throw you out in the open, for the tutorials you have to open your iDroid and read all the different topics. It would be nice if you could just play through a ten minute tutorial that takes care of most of the basic things you need to know because the first time I played I hardly knew anything. What I also don't like is the hunger and thirst issues, for some people this might add a bigger challenge but for other people it's just more frustration.
Would you buy Metal Gear Survive?
To be totally honest, no I wouldn't. Why? Because there are too many things in the game I don't like and I can just see myself getting frustrated with this game really fast. It's not a bad game actually, but I don't think it's a game for me. I think they could've left the Metal Gear part out and just make a survival game but I guess they wanted to use the Metal Gear Solid background story to boost this game in recognition. Unfortunately the game also got a lot of hate for that. I honestly don't think that it's a bad game, I just know for a fact that it's not the type of game that I would enjoy. But people who like survival games, open worlds and third person shooter combat will have a blast with this especially if they play with friends. The solo experience feels empty and weak, not something I would recommend to others and as much as the single player was great in Metal Gear Solid 5 that's not the same for Metal Gear Survive. The game only costs 40 Dollars/Euros so if you're interested then it's not an expensive buy. Just check it out yourself and see if it's something you would enjoy. Don't listen to what other people say, make up your own mind and if you like the game then who gives a shit what someone else thinks of that!
