Sinful Sunday: Get mad? Don't play games!

One of my New Year's resolutions is trying to stay calm and not get frustrated with games so easily. That's of course easier said than done because certain games can easily frustrate you, on top of that I'm easily annoyed by something so I pretty much have a resolution that is bound to fail. So I could just stop playing games or perhaps try to avoid the more frustrating games. I guess there is no winner with this, so I might just end up doing what I always do and see where it goes.

Are games really that frustrating?

For me games can be very frustrating sometimes. Even the little frustrating moments can build up to a big explosion of frustration and anger. For example in the Sims 4 you're under constant stress when you have multiple sims with their careers and they all need to be kept happy and at the same time keep improving skills so they can get a promotion. It seems simple but when some douchebag keeps cancelling my commands or spends five hours, in game time, eating food then it becomes really frustrating after some time. It's all these little things that build up frustration and sooner or later you will explode in anger if you don't take a break or play a more relaxing game. The same happens in multiplayer, you start with such good hope and joy and that is soon crushed when someone keeps killing you and no matter what you do you just can't seem to do anything about that. You can be positive, happy and patient but sooner or later you will get fed up with that and get annoyed. Which makes sense because it's not fun dying or failing all the time in a game, I doubt anyone would truly enjoy that. For this reason it's probably better not to play too many multiplayer games if you want to stay happy or at least positive. Unless you're amazing at multiplayer you will have to deal with defeat and sometimes even getting destroyed in a game, as in you lose all the time and can barely get a kill. That sucks and makes you feel miserable, not really a feeling you want to feel when you play games and yet people will play these games a lot because everyone wants to be a winner. Unfortunately only one person can be a winner and the chance for that being you is going to be very small.

Why play games if they make you mad?

Because not every game makes me mad? Besides games are often fun, right up to the point when they're not that fun anymore. I mean we all have moments where we fail or might even get stuck, that sucks but with all the online guides it shouldn't be that difficult to find a way forward. The reward for completing games might seem ridiculous, an achievement or a trophy, but the feeling that gives you is something you can't really describe. Being able to beat a difficult game or just a game you consider to be challenging is a personal victory and that is worth quite a lot! The same counts for doing well in multiplayer, the joy you can experience by doing well and getting that top spot is a good feeling. I think that's why most of us play these games, not that we enjoy being angry or frustrated but we all want that joy of winning and succes. I know that there are exceptions and that some people love making other people feel miserable but I guess sad sacks of shit also play games, unfortunately that's not against the law. It does help if you focus on games you really like and try to avoid games that frustrate you really fast. Games are meant to be fun and when you're not having fun in a game then that game might not be the game for you. It's just a thought but hopefully it keeps you from a bad experience and keeps you into the fun experience of gaming!
