Sequels we will probably never get
Imagine this, you just played the most amazing game ever and you had so much fun with it. A lot of people seem to enjoy it and you can't wait for a sequel, but then ten years later you get the feeling that the sequel isn't being made and might never be made. It's a big kick in the balls, to give that feeling a name, and you honestly wonder how this is possible? Why would the developers not make a sequel? Well there could be several reasons but the problem remains and that's you without a sequel to a game you love to play.
Why aren't they making a sequel?
Sometimes there are really lame reasons. Not because a game did so badly but because the company that made the game got bought by another company and now they make different games. You might not expect that but it has happened! But sometimes companies also go bankrupt, because the game wasn't a huge succes or they spend more then they earned with the games they made. There are also developers that just want to do something different, for example Rocksteady is done with the Batman games and wants to move on to making other games. Which is a shame but I do respect their choice. You can make the same type of games over and over again but part of what makes games so good often is the team that's working on them is enjoying what they're doing. If it becomes too much of a repetition then I fear that the quality of the game might suffer under that. It really sucks when a game you love wasn't that popular and so there won't be a sequel or when they do make a sequel it's made by different developers or they make a different version of the game. Just look at Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. I don't say that I hate the Old Republic but I would much rather play a single player adventure with Revan than play a mmorpg as a random character.
There's always a chance that the sequel might come?
Sure, never say never. But in all honesty in some cases you might want to start looking at other games instead of hoping for that sequel. I think a lot of Half Life fans are hoping for Half Life 3 but as far as I know Valve doesn't believe in making a number 3 game in a game series. So we have two numbered Half Life games (also some episodes but that's different), two Team Fortress games, two Left for Dead games and two Portal games. Are you starting to see a theme? Well as much as I want to see a third game for any of these games I don't really believe in seeing that happening. I would love to be wrong on this but if I have to be realistic then I don't see that happening and that's a huge shame! But sometimes games do get a sequel, just look at Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil. So maybe some people believed in a sequel and their long waiting finally payed off, but in all honesty I think this is more like an exception. But feel free to wait for those sequels you really want to see, I prefer to focus on games that are launching this year.
