The Evil Within 2, fun and frustration!

Last week I talked about my unfortunately experience with a save bug, it kept me from being able to save the game and eventually made it impossible to play the game. I removed the game from my harddrive and then installed it again, restarted my console and now it seems to work. I honestly hope that was a one time thing because if that happens several times you just don't want to keep playing. Does that make the Evil Within 2 a bad game? No, but the game does have some issues...

Open world adventure?

One of the big surprises of the Evil Within 2 is that it's an open world, at least for some part. There are parts in the game where you can go where you want to go and pretty much explore that area as much as you want. There are a lot of things to discover and several secrets that can give you a great benefit in the battles later in the game. You can also stumble on some scary moments, for example the singing ghost lady that can be terrifying! I really like how the game allows you to move more freely and let you choose your own path for these areas. But there are also moments in the game where there is only one path and the game will direct you towards the goal. The boss fights are actually not that difficult, maybe I was just very well prepared but there wasn't one boss fight that gave me problems and I was playing on survival difficulty (normal) so there could've been moments that could get you stuck. The game wasn't that scary, I mean the monsters look disgusting but nothing that really scared me that much. That singing ghost lady was probably the most terrifying part of it but that was mostly because you can't kill her and if she spots you you're dead! Which makes those encounters a lot scarier!

Enemies are dumb?

Most enemies you encounter are really dumb, I mean totally stupid and unbelievable quick to forget you were even there. If an enemy spots you they'll get suspicious and start investigating, when they spot you they'll chase you busy you can easily just outrun them and then around the corner they will already lost you and look puzzled and return to where they were. Really weird and dumb behaviour. What's also weird is that enemies will sometimes still hear you sneak, eventhough you have your sneak skills maximized, but if you break boxes near them they won't hear that. These seem like some mistakes but honestly it's apparently logic in this game. The combat system is still pretty bad in the Evil Within 2, I wasn't a fan of it in the first game and apparently the developers thought it was fine the way it was because it still sucks in the sequel. But at the same time it does fit a bit in the survival horror type of game. You're not a killing machine, you're a guy trying to survive in a hostile world where almost everyone and everything is trying to kill you. Having crappy combat skills makes that a bit more challenging.

Is this game worth checking out?

I think it is, because I definitely had fun playing the game and the story isn't that bad either. It's a shame that you get different voice actors in this game but it doesn't ruin the experience and I did enjoy playing through the chapters. The game is more disturbing than scary in my opinion, but there are scary moments and some jump scare moments if you're caught off guard. As I mentioned before the singing ghost lady is absolutely one of the most scary elements about the game, especially if she starts showing up randomly in the game world and you have to get as far away from her as you can! My biggest issue with the Evil Within 2 is the save bug, it almost ruined the entire game for me. I haven't heard anyone else about this so it might just be a one time thing or just some unlucky bullshit. It hasn't happened again but I just want you to be aware of that it happened to me and that it could also happen to you. You can beat the game pretty fast if you ignore the collectibles and play on an easy difficulty. On higher difficulties you will need the extra ammo and other items you can find by exploring a bit. The game is absolutely worth checking out if you like survival horror games and you're in need of something else in your life than the games you've been playing lately. The Evil Within is a decent game and I had fun playing it. If you're not certain about buying then you can always rent it.
