Oxenfree, an unexpected pleasure!
I have to admit that I didn't really know much about Oxenfree, I think I heard about the game once but it didn't really stick. But with the game being for free for gold members on Xboxlive I couldn't resist checking it out and I have to admit that the game is actually pretty good! I really like that when games you know hardly anything about are actually that good. A true unexpected pleasure!
Stupid plan leads to stupid things?
You play as Alex, a girl who goes to an island with some of her friends and her step brother Jonas, and you bring your radio to see if you can create some weird sounds and lights at the mouth of a cave. It seems harmless but when she enters the cave and sees something weird she opens a rift that somehow messes everything up! Separated from the others, except Jonas, she now has to find her friends and try to escape from the island. Of course that's easier said than done and all the weird things that are going on make it a lot harder. But without spoiling anything else I have to admit that this is an amazing game that you might want to play multiple times just to see different endings and of course get more achievements.
What makes this game so good?
First of all the fact that the game is fully voiced, this makes the game so much better and brings the characters closer to you and make them feel more alive. With just text on the screen the game would be less intense and interesting in my opinion, but because everyone actually has a voice you have a stronger connection with the characters. This brings me to the other point of picking your answers, because you don't have to just sit and watch what everyone is saying. You can choose from several answers and decide if you want to be a nice person or a total douchebag. For example tell another girl that your best friend, in the game, has a crush on her or not. There is even an achievement where everyone hates you, so good luck with that if you want to be that person. What's also great about Oxenfree is the freedom in the game, sure the game points you where need to go but you can totally explore the other parts as well and decide what you want to do. Do you save this person or the other person first? You can also find several collectibles that give you some background information about the mysteries of the island and discovering anomalies actually lead to some really creepy messages.
Should you check out this game?
If you're a gold member on Xboxlive then that's absolutely a yes, but even if you can't play the game for free then I can still recommend the game to you. It's really that good. It has a bit of a creepy vibe to it but it's not exactly a survival horror game. But it's definitely a game for you if you like adventure and being social with the NPCs. This can lead to some funny, touching or even ridiculous conversations. I had an absolute blast playing Oxenfree and eventhough the game isn't that long, I beat it in four hours it's definitely worth playing again. So feel free to check it out if you're interested.
