Sinful Sunday: Breaking the rules

Rules are meant to be broken, at least that's what some people say. Eventhough I have a rebel heart I do like certain rules. I mean it keeps things in order instead of complete chaos. For example when I play a game I like it when there are rules, because without rules it's just complete chaos and I doubt it will be as much fun as some people might think. Rules also keep cheaters away and the cheaters that do try to mess things up are hopefully caught and kicked out. So rules are definitely important, but sometimes just sometimes it can be fun to break the rules.

I'm a nice guy?

For an angry scumbag I can be incredibly on board with the rules in games and even with the default settings. I hate messing with the settings too much because I always worry that I mess things up too much that it ruins the gameplay. I hardly ever try to exploit a game, sure I'll use a powerful weapon that is probably overpowered but it's usually just to defend myself against other people who use this weapon. I often carry the overpowered weapon and start using it when some douchebag in the match keeps killing me with an overpowered weapon. You fight fire with fire, at least that's how I see it! Destiny 2 crucible matches are full of people that always use the same weapons that are very effective there. So I made certain that I got those weapons as well and only use them when others are using them against me. That seems fair to me! I like to stick to the familiar, so I usually don't venture too far away into the unknown. In the Evil Within 2 I actually turned back from an area because I felt that I went too far from the mission area, not knowing that I was like ten meters away fom a new weapon, the sawed off shotgun, which made me feel like an idiot later. So yeah maybe I'm not as much of a rebel as I like to believe myself but it's not a crime to be careful is it?

When to break and when not to break rules?

I don't like cheating, hacking or anything like that. I'm not even a big fan of adding mods to a game. I did that a lot in the Sims 2 and that eventually fucked up the game so much for me that it almost became unplayable. But sometimes you just want to explore and when the game tries to push you back you just push harder forward and sometimes discover hidden areas. So maybe breaking the rules isn't always a bad thing, besides this is probably more a bending the rules situation. I've only used cheats in two games, the first game was the Sims because I really hated having to wait to earn enough money to buy cool stuff so yeah I used the cheats to get more money in the game. The other game I used cheats in was Saints Row, I used that in single player because there was this one mission, a side mission where you could earn a new follower, and I just couldn't beat it because the cops kept destroying my vehicle. So I used a cheat to become invulnerable just to see what happens if you beat that mission. Afterwards I saved that data over my original game data which made it all useless, so I was immediately cured of my cheat experiment. It just doesn't pay off and even if you win with cheats it still feels like losing. So I don't cheat, unless I need some extra money in the Sims!

Why do some people break the rules?

A popular answer is because they can. Other people are just lazy, why do your best and earn something when you can just use cheats and get it handed to you? Yes this is coming from the lazy guy with the Sims cheats. It sucks if you have to earn it, especially if it takes a long time but at the end it is so much more satisfying when you got there on your own skill instead of using cheats. I played some free for all in Overwatch this week and I got first place with nine points ahead of the number 2. This felt great! I did my best and I got a nice reward for it. If you would use cheats then you probably also get first place but it's just lame at that point, oh another win how nice. At the same time you screw over all the other players in the match and ruin the fun for them, which makes the cheater a horrible person at the same time. I know it can be tempting to break the rules but keep in mind that there are rules for a reason. We all want to do something crazy or wild sometimes but that doesn't mean you have to. Rules are meant to be broken? Even if that is true then that doesn't mean that they have to be broken.
