Every game needs a loot box?
It seems that almost every game has a loot box system these days. But the purpose of the loot box isn't always the same. In some games it's just for cosmetics and in other games it has game changing elements in it. For example a powerful weapon that will give you a benefit or some bonus experience that lets you level up faster. This might seem harmless but a lot of people aren't happy with this. This raises the question, do we need loot boxes in games? Let's find out!
Loot boxes make games better?
When I look at a game like Overwatch then loot boxes are pretty cool, you earn one every time you level up and every week you can earn three bonus loot boxes for every three wins in arcade mode. This gives you acces to new cosmetics, for example skins, emotes or sprays. This doesn't hurt the game but it can hurt your wallet quite a bit! But that's only when you decide to buy them, when you don't feel like earning them with leveling up. The loot boxes did have issues in Overwatch, you would get a ridiculous amount of duplicates, but that's fixed and now you can get a lot of new stuff. Unfortunately luck is a big factor when it comes to getting what you want and not everyone is that lucky. This will involve you playing the game a lot, because during an event the loot boxes in Overwatch are only available for three weeks, or you have to pay for the loot boxes with money. Either way that isn't really that much fun in my opinion. Other games like Black Ops 3 and Battlefield 1 also have loot boxes but these contain other items that can have some cosmetic traits but also some functional items. For example melee weapons in Black Ops 3. It's not something that would give you a benefit but more something that makes you look a bit more interesting in the game. Which is pretty much the same idea as the Overwatch loot boxes. You don't really need it but it can definitely make your character look a bit more interesting.
You don't need loot boxes?
Not really, I mean the moment you would need them then the game would be broken. People would either have to play the game a lot to earn them or spend more money on the game to get some progress or an advantage in the game. This seems wrong to me and I doubt many people are happy with such a system. The problem is that too many games want to have a loot box system while you could just as well earn certain rewards in the game. For example get all the collectibles, beat the game on a certain difficulty or make it a multiplayer level type of reward (the higher level you have the more rewards you unlock). But I guess the loot box system is more popular because it's a random item generator. It can give you cool stuff but it can also give you garbage. It's not a big surprise that it seems like most of the time you get garbage and every now and then something good. It's as if you get hooked on something, so at first you get something good, and then you end up earning or buying more just to get more good items and yet you end up getting a lot of stuff you don't care about. Loot boxes have a certain addiction to them, it's a gambling system that really sucks and hardly ever works in your favour. Oh sure you can get good stuff but at the same time you can end up opening twenty boxes and still not get what you want. That's because it's all random, nothing is determined. So I don't think you need loot boxes in a game, I'd say a game without loot boxes would be a huge improvement in my opinion. Let people earn loot and not get it as a random drop from a box that may or may not give you something good. Opening loot boxes can be a very frustrating experience and some people throw a lot of money at these loot boxes. Which is of course big business but at the same time a really dirty and broken system that most players don't even want. Some say that these loot boxes support the game, which is nice, but isn't dlc for that? Oh I know that some games have free dlc, for example GTA V and Overwatch, but I'd rather pay a bit of money for the dlc I'm interested in than getting screwed with loot boxes every time. Because you can easily throw a hundred Euros at loot boxes if you're not careful! Maybe that's more of a personal problem for some people but I think most people would like to get something good out of a loot box and it's very tempting to try you luck. But honestly we don't need loot boxes!
