Gone Home, not what I expected but that's not a bad thing!

When I first saw Gone Home I was wondering what kind of game it would be, from the screenshots I got a kind of spooky vibe so I quickly thought that it was some type of survival horror and at times it absolutely feels that way. But Gone Home is a bit different, which is actually not a bad thing and definitely a game you want to play even if it would be only once. Besides it's free for Xbox One gold members, so feel free to check it out if you're interested.

Alone in the house?

You play as Kaitlin, a young woman who just came home after spending a year in Europe. You arrive in front of an old house and find a note on the door. It's one of many from your younger sister, Samantha, and on these notes you figure out what happened in the year that you were away. These notes aren't just clues but also moments of relief when you hear the voice of Samantha and not the old house noises that can be really freaky at times. The house is huge, so be ready to go on a long walk through the entire house and discover some secret passage ways. This isn't just cool but also creepy as you read about the ghost hunting adventures of Samantha and her new friend Lonnie. The constant noises you hear in the house make you believe that you're not alone, that there is someone or something else there with you. Which makes turning on all the lights priority number one!

You are your own worst enemy?

There are games where monsters come running at you and then there are games where you just hear noises and your imagination does the rest. Gone Home is such a game where you can already imagine what might happen next or you would prefer not to turn around because there could be someone behind you. I had this moment in the basement when I found an old closet with an old piece of paper on the ground and the light didn't work, I had  this strong feeling that if I turned around that a ghost would be there. Of course there was nothing there but I honestly had that strong feeling that there would be one and my own imagination was my enemy there. The game will mess with you and the storm you hear outside the house doesn't make it any easier.

Should you check out this game?

If you appreciate a good story and you can handle a spooky environment then you should be ok. Honestly the game isn't that scary, it's mostly your own imagination that will be making it harder for you to step into the next dark area of the house. It's really worth it to find all the notes from Samantha, I won't spoil anything but I can really recommend it because it's really good. You can actually finish the game within a minute, there is even an achievement for it, but I would urge you not to play too fast and really enjoy it as it's meant to. The game isn't what I expected but that's not a bad thing, I actually enjoyed playing Gone Home. So yeah it's definitely a game you would want to check out, even if you just play it once.
