Sinful Sunday: Why so negative?

It was a crazy time with all the new videos coming out, so many new trailers and gameplay videos. But I noticed that below almost every video there would be a lot of people that were so negative. It wasn't just the typical troll saying that the game sucks but people that are complaining that the E3 is a joke, that there are no new games coming out worth their attention or that there is only one game they liked and the rest is all garbage. It really made me think what happened to the gaming community, why are there so many people so negative?

What makes gamers so negative?

About twenty years ago people were often very excited if new games were launched, it was a special time because back then you would get new games every week. I think that is one of the problems these days, there are so many new games coming out every week that some people get sick and tired of them and easily fall into a negativity. The last game I played sucked so this new game probably sucks too. At least that's the idea I'm getting from some people. Of course some people are just spoiled scumbags, as if getting free games with a gold membership on Xbox Live or Playstation Plus on PSN isn't enough. Even with a game looking as amazing as Anthem the trolls are ready with the stupid comments about how this game is such a rip off or how much it's going to suck just like Mass Effect Andromeda (by the way Mass Effect Andromeda might have been not as good as we all hoped but I wouldn't say that it sucked). I never really understand what the deal is behind this type of behaviour. Is this some sad attempt for attention? Are they going through a tough time and they need to bring every down with them? Or are they just assholes that can't behave like normal people? Whatever the reason is it's just so weird. I've bought stupid games, even games that really sucked and I regret ever buying them but it doesn't turn me into a negative douchebag. Maybe it's just the time of the year, I know that I often feel depressed in Summer. But you don't see me going into the comment section being a sad sack of shit. If I had to come up with an answer I do think it's a bit of a combination of gamers these days being spoiled and the attitude of a lot of people online. I'm not saying that it's all bad but people that are already knows as assholes just turn into bigger assholes online. Oh look I'm just a random name online, let me be a complete and utter douchebag. I guess some people have a need for that, which is already sad enough in my opinion.

Maybe people are just giving their opinion?

You would think that but when people are going to leave comments about how much a game sucks or how every E3 reveal is garbage then I wonder if that's really an opinion. You see an opinion is often accompanied by arguments. For example, I don't like this game because there is a lot of platforming in it and I'm really bad at that. Without typing a whole essay, I know that some people do this as well, I give my opinion and say why I don't like a game. Some people might think differently but that's ok, we don't all like the same things and I think that's a good thing otherwise the world would be a boring place. There are also people that sell their opinion as fact, because they think a game is this or that then it must be true. An opinion is and opinion, it's what you think and if you want to separate yourself from the trolls then you should also mention why you think a game is good or bad. It's easy to say a game is good or that a game is bad, but try to come up with a good reason why this game is good or bad and then a lot of people go silent or come up with some lame examples. For example I don't like this game because it looks stupid. Yes ok, but why does it look stupid to you? What exactly makes it stupid? Sometimes I wish there was like a way you could filter all the crap from the comments sections and just keep the comments that are actually showing some signs of intelligence.

Why are so many people so negative?

You might not like this answer but I think it's probably true. The reason why a lot of people are so negative is because they can be negative. Leaving a comment online is as easy as kicking a ball. Kicking the ball can have consequences but usually only to a minimum, leaving certain comments online can have big consequences which is exactly what some people are hoping for. Some people don't want to be positive, it's more fun for them to be negative. To annoy other people, to bring other people down or to just release some frustration in the form of a negative comment. It's easy and it's not like you're going to get caught. You can be an utter douchebag online and get away with it, which is probably why some people do it. Some people also enjoy ruining the fun of other people. For example a lot of people are excited about a certain game or movie, the comments are positive and happy until a couple of negative comments show up and try to annoy everyone. What's probably the dumbest thing is that a lot of people give a like to these negative comments, which means they're often high in the comment section and makes it look like a lot of people agree with this. There's also a good chance that some trolls just have multiple accounts and like their own comments with these accounts, yes the sadness of some people knows no bounds! But you know what the interesting part is? No matter how much negativity people spit out online it will never stop people from buying games, watching movies or reading books/comics. The trolls might feel powerful online but in the end it's just a sad sack of shit behind a screen, you decide what you like and don't like! If you're interested in playing a game then go for it! Don't let the negativity stop you!
