It's not important who wins a game?
I was raised to always go for the win, 2nd place only makes you the best loser is what I heard when I wasn't first. Even now as an adult this is still burned into my head and drives me to win, but it's not an obsession and I don't fall apart when I lose. But I have to admit that I prefer to win and will do my best to win. This does raise a question, is it really important to win or is having fun more important?
Winning is fun, fun is winning?
My first decade of gaming was definitely described that way. I love games that made me beat my family and friends and I hated games where I couldn't beat them. I would play certain games so much just to beat the highscore of a friend, because that's what you do when you're a competitive douchebag. But in truth it never made me happy, I mean sure at first it feels good to win but it's not this is what truly makes you happy. I discovered that just spending time with family and friends playing games was actually that made me happy. Getting a win out of that match would of course be great but it wasn't the best part, it was actually having fun playing a game with my friends that made it such a great experience. Even now twenty years later I think about that, how much fun I had with friends playing certain games and I don't even care who won in which game. I won't deny that winning is fun, but it's definitely not the most important part about playing a game. I would much rather lose every game I play and have fun with my friends than to win every game and feel miserable. Winning gives you a short moment of happiness, having fun with your friends can last a life time!
There's nothing wrong with some competition?
Nope, some friendly rivalry can actually stimulate you do to better and get better. I've heard this from skaters that having friends with them in the park makes them want to do even better on their board. I think it's the same with gamers, when you're on your own you play in a certain way but with your friends you might want to show off or want to do your best. But at the same time it's usually, with good friends, a more fun experience and often takes the serious part out of the competitive games. It's about having fun and not about shouting at eachother for making a mistake. Frustration is everywhere and I understand that it's easy to get annoyed with someone or something, but remember that winning isn't everything and as much as you might enjoy certain things it's a lot more important to have fun playing a game than to win everything! If you compete against strangers then there might be more hostility but you should keep in mind that the moment things get unpleasant is that it's just a game and that it's not a matter of life and death. So what if the other person is an annoying douchebag that teabags you, let the him or her have his or her moment. As long as you have fun playing a game you're never a loser!
