Survival horror games are scarier when you can't defend yourself?
Outlast 2 is a popular survival horror game and I'll admit that it's creepy, but my biggest issue with these type of games is that you can't defend yourself. Some people say that this is how survival horror games should be, but let's be honest if someone is trying to kill then you'll hide in a barrel or in long grass? No you will do whatever you can to survive, which means you would bite them, kick them, punch them or spit on them. But just being hit and not being able to do anything back is just stupid in my opinion.
Survival horror is better when you can defend yourself?
I think it is because it really sucks when you have no defense against enemies. When someone is grabbing someone you love then you're just going to stand there shouting or are you going to do something?!!! A game like Outlast 2 doesn't scare me, it pisses me off how useless I am and how it all comes down to me trying to run past enemies or sneak through an area with crappy sneak skills. If all you have is a camera then that is just lame, I want to be able to defend myself and no I don't expect to survive against a group of enemies attacking me but it's nice when you have at least have a fighting chance. Otherwise what's the point? I guess it's safe to say that I'm not a fan of the Outlast 2 method of playing, which doesn't make it a bad game just not a game for someone like me. I think Resident Evil 7 did a much better job, it's creepy and also leaves you helpless at point but almost always gives you a fighting chance. Then it's up to you if you want to fight or prefer to run, I like this so much more than the always run and hide method. I don't even consider Outlast 2 as scarier, I'm way too pissed off to be scared when you get caught and killed again because you couldn't find a hiding spot in time. I guess these games aren't for everyone but I really wish you had at least a way of doing something.
Defenseless hero is the best hero?
Some people seem to think so, it makes these type of games more scarier for some people when they can't defend themselves. I can't help but feel like one of those teenagers in a teen slasher movie, you're dumb and you're most likely going to die. Maybe some people like that, which kind of surprises me. But perhaps it's more realistic that you can't always defend yourself, I mean in your head you'll probably would want to do whatever you can but sometimes people are frozen with fear or just unable to do anything against certain threats. So maybe the defenseless hero is the more realistic hero and that makes it a bit scarier, it comes closer to reality and that makes things in my opinion usually a lot scarier. I still don't like being defenseless in a game but I can see how some people like that and it makes sense in a way. But I do think that this isn't for everyone, some people just prefer to grab a gun or melee weapon and fight for their life! I guess we all have our own favourite way of playing a game.
