Overwatch vs Paladins

I must admit that the first time I saw Paladins I couldn't help but think that it's a cheap copy of Overwatch and eventhough there are definitely some similarities they're not the same. I played both games and both games are fun to play, so whatever you prefer you don't make a bad choice. But why choose when you can play both games?

What makes Overwatch so much fun to play?

For me it's mostly the unique characters, every character plays different and there are more than twenty so you can imagine that this means you have a lot of things to try out. There are several game modes that you can try out and wether you like to mess around in arcade mode, train in quickplay or go into try hard mode in ranked it's usually fun to play. The least fun about Overwatch is usually other players that can be incredibly toxic or annoying. The customization in Overwatch is pretty cool as well, every hero has a lot of different skins, voice lines, victory poses, highlight intros and sprays so you can go wild with that. The only problem is that you need to unlock that in loot boxes or buy them with gold you can earn from loot boxes or if you get duplicates. Overwatch is a great game to play with friends, especially in modes like 3 vs 3 where you have a big advantage over a random team that doesn't communicate. The dlc, new characters and maps, is for free so once you buy the game you can enjoy new content and participate in events that happen quite often actually. It's not always fun to play Overwatch, for example bad matchmaking or toxic players, but I think it's a fun game to check out if you're looking for a first person shooter that isn't taking itself too serious.

What makes Paladins so much fun to play?

For me it's the characters that make Paladins a fun game, yes just like Overwatch, because they have some interesting abilities and it's absolutely a joy to try all of them out to find out what works best for you. You can be as extreme as a damage dealer, be the man (or woman) up front as a front line specialist, be the thorn in the side of the enemy team as flanker or give health to allies and nasty surprises to enemies as support. The first four characters I played are all different and I had fun as all of them, this made me want to play more and try out other characters. Something a lot of people will like is that Paladins is free to play, so you just download the game and you can play! Something I also like about Paladins is that you not only earn experience when you complete matches but also gold, so if you want to unlock more heroes or customizable stuff then you can do that pretty fast if you play some matches and there is also a log in bonus if you log in every day for some extra gold and eventually crystals that are worth even more.

Which game does it better?

Ok this is probably what you want to know, which game does something better than the other?

Matchmaking: Overwatch.

Why? Because Paladins will get you in matches quickly but if one person doesn't accept to join the match or pick a character within the time limit then the match is cancelled for everyone. So if someone wants to be an annoying douchebag they ruin things for the others. Overwatch also has matchmaking issues but it has gotten better and I think it's more stable than it is in Paladins.

Making progress in the game: Paladins.

Why? Because Overwatch levels you up pretty slow and you only get a loot box for leveling up that will often get you bad items. In Paladins you get experience, gold and depending on your level you also get loot boxes (usually 1 loot box for every 2 levels) and at first you level up pretty fast. You also level up separately with each hero which means you can farm a lot of loot boxes if you play with all the 25 heroes. The fact that you get gold for each match you complete means you can unlock new heroes and customize your characters faster. This doesn't make leveling up more fun but also get things done much faster!

Hero customization: Overwatch.

Why? Because Overwatch gives you a lot of customization options, I think this is a bit lacking in Paladins. You earn gold much faster in Paladins but in Overwatch you would probably want to spend gold more often on stuff you like. All the heroes in Overwatch have legendary skins and those are often the best ones and also most expensive ones. What I will give to Paladins is that you can customize several parts of heroes separately. So if you like the hair or helmet of one style, the armor of another style and then the weapon skin of a different style then that's all possible to combine. In Overwatch it's all one, so one skin is how the character looks like and the weapon skin you use unless you have a gold weapon skin.

Character specilization: Paladins.

Why? Because Paladins allows you to customize your hero with a lot of detail thanks to cards you can select in your character build. This makes certain abilities recharge faster, you gain more health from using a certain ability, another ability does more damage with that certain card in your inventory. In Overwatch each hero does exactly this and nothing more, that's probably more fair but doesn't give more depth into characters. A Reaper in Overwatch will only be able to do this and nothing more while Viktor in Paladins can improve his abilities with the card system. You also gain credits during the match and you can use these to buy improvements for your character, so do you want to have better damage resistance or faster reload speed? You can buy these when you're in the spawning area during the match. This can give you an edge in the match and help you win.

Of course there is a lot more going on in these games but this should at least give you an idea what you can expect in both games. Sure Overwatch looks a bit prettier but I think Paladins is a bit more diverse and gives you more depth with the character and no I don't mean story wise but with building them up and improving their skills. Yeah some characters from Paladins look a lot like characters from Overwatch but trust me when I say that they're not the same! Androxus looks a bit like Reaper with McCree's pistol, but his abilities are different and his super isn't death blossom. If you actually give Paladins a chance then you would know that the game isn't a cheap copy of Overwatch. They're both fun games and I can definitely recommend them both. I think that Paladins might actually be a nice distraction for Overwatch veterans, it's something new and it definitely beats playing the same game every day.

Is one game better than the other?

That depends what you find important. If you care more about graphics than anything else then Overwatch is probably more your type of game, but if you like more depth in characters builds then Paladins is your type of game. But if you're just looking for a fun game to play with friends or just random people then both games are great! Instead of making things always a competition of who is better let's just say that they're both good games and fun to play. But I would like to add that Paladins is still in beta so eventhough you can earn achievement/trophies it's not even completely finished so things can only get better! At least I hope so!
