Sinful Sunday: Throwing a game

I'm not talking about literally throwing a game, eventhough that would be a dick move as well considering it's not your game and you damage it. Throwing a game means that you lose on purpose just to screw over other people in your team. In deathmatch this doesn't work but in team deathmatch or other type of team game modes it can be extremely frustrating.

Why do people throw a game?

The main reason is to be an asshole, because what better way to troll other people than making them lose constantly. In a game like Overwatch it happens quite often, especially in ranked mode where losing cost you points and it can even mean that you lose your rank (assuming you're in master, grand master or top 500 tiers). I'll never truly understand how some people consider this as funny because you make certain other people that you don't even know lose and this amuses someone? That doesn't make sense to me! Then there is the retaliation, when someone keeps whining or calling you names you can reach a point where you just had enough and you don't care if you win or lose. So you throw the game. My problem with this is that you punish everyone else in the team as well, so it's not really fair to them. I have actually done this myself in Overwatch, this happened in the Uprising event and I was in a team with three other people that were all in a group. These guys never heal me, I was playing as Reinhardt (the tank) so I could really use those heals and when we had to stand together on the payload to continue they all stand around it doing their stupid emotes just to annoy me. I told them, I had my mic plugged in, that I just wanted to play and try to beat the uprising event on legendary. These guys didn't listen and I just had enough! So I stepped away from the payload and when the game would finally continue, after a certain amount of time it would continue by itself, I just looked from a distance how they got butchered by the bots. They were mad but it was their own fault, if people just play the game and leave the bullshit out of it then you can just get on with it. But no people like to be assholes, so I showed these douchebags that I can be an asshole too! There is also a very strange and disturbing reason why people throw a game. They blackmail the team, this has happened in Overwatch, and tell them that they need to pay him or her money on Paypal otherwise he or she will throw the game. Yes I know that this sounds insane but it actually happens! Being a sad sack of shit troll or a tilted fuck that wants revenge is one thing but to go as far as blackmailing is just ridiculous and going way too far. If people wouldn't pay the person blackmailing them he or she would throw the game and it would cost them skill rating and might even cost them their rank. This happened on grand master rank so I doubt you have to worry too much about this on the lower ranks but apparently some people are just utter scumbags. My advice, don't pay and report anyone who does that because this doesn't belong in a game!

What do you do about throwers?

You can block and report them, hopefully you never have to deal with them again but nothing is certain unfortunately. Maybe some think that my reaction to the trolls in the uprising event was too extreme but when people do this in almost every match and all you want to do is trying to get the achievements before the event is over then things can get ugly. I understand that some people don't take things that seriously but when I ask politely to continue and they just ignore you and keep taunting you then you can be the moron that just sits there and let them crap all over you or get revenge and make certain that they fail. I know it's not very mature but it sure feels good to get your revenge on some annoying trolls. I think some people are just too quickly annoyed and will throw almost at the first sign of trouble. Last week I saw a guy post a video of a grand master ranked match in Overwatch where one guy got annoyed with another player and threw the match just because of that. One guy called the other a terrible Reinhardt, which wasn't true because he was doing actually pretty good, and the Reinhardt took great offense to that and decided to throw the match and kept picking squishy characters and pretty much made certain that his team would lose. As much as I hate toxic players it's wrong to punish the entire team because of what one person says. So this makes the Reinhardt just as bad as the guy being toxic. The dumbest thing is that they were winning at that point, so there was no reason to be toxic at all. Some people don't understand why I prefer to play single player games and all I have to do is point them to multiplayer videos on YouTube from games like Overwatch, Battlefield 1 or CoD. Playing with friends is fun, playing with random stranger feels a bit like Russian roulette sometimes. My advice is to try and get through a game, try not to throw even if you're really annoyed. Because if you throw then you all lose, even if it feels like you won at first. If you're frustrated then don't play that game or play games at all, take a break and do something else. It's better to prevent something than to cure something!
