Freedom

Today is the fifth of May, in the Netherlands we celebrate our liberation from the Germans in World War II. But it's more than that, it's a day we celebrate our freedom as a nation, we're free to do and say what we want (of course there are things you can't do or say but that's how you keep the peace). Unfortunately we don't all realize that we're blessed to have this freedom, a lot of countries in the world don't have that and for them freedom is just a dream. But nothing is impossible, a lot of impossible things can become possible and it usually starts with someone having a dream.

Freedom is precious!

When I watch a movie, play games or walk with my dog outside I don't always realize it but I live in a free country. I don't have to be afraid to have an opinion and I can read the news that isn't controlled by the government. For some people this seems normal but there are a lot of countries, some closer than you think, that don't have the luxury of freedom. For all of us that are born in the last twenty or thirty years we don't know anything else but freedom here in the Netherlands and also a lot of other countries in the world, we're living in a country where people argue and sometimes bad things happen but there is freedom. We have freedom to stand up for others, for ourselves and for everything we hold dear. Eventhough opinions aren't always appreciated or sometimes people are even threatened for having a different opinion it's your right to have that opinion and we should hold on to that! You truly learn to appreciate freedom when you visit a country where there is very little or no freedom at all. Then you can get an idea how life can also be, when it's not normal to have an opinion that isn't tolerated or to do what you want in your spare time.

Hate is the enemy of freedom!

In a free world there is no hate, because we all accept eachother for who and what we are. Unfortunately we don't live in a free world. There are countries where people are being killed for having a different religion, a different skin colour, a different sexuality or they just have a different opinion. When you let hate into your heart then you give up some freedom, because your world becomes a bit darker with the hate that destroys all that is good inside of you. There might be a time and a place where this hate feels good, it feels righteous and it doesn't feel like a mistake. But when you get older and the sins of your past catch up with you then you might think differently, the feelings of hate become a burden that make is harder to swim in the ocean of life and it makes you drown. I'm not saying we should all hold hands and love eachother, but learn to accept eachother and try to make the most of what you have. It's easy to hate, but it's difficult to love someone especially when they're different.

Freedom makes the world a better place!

I think freedom gives you the opportunity to make the world a better place, so that your children and grandchildren can live in a better world. A world where you don't have to hide your sexuality, a world where people with different skin colours can be together without being judged and you can have whatever religion you want. Wether you believe in someone or something, believe in freedom and let it into your heart. Share it with others around you and hopefully that is the start of something good. Nobody forces you to do anything, but to make the world a better place you have to make a step forward. We can sit still, not say a word and live a quiet life. But then your kids will still have the same world as we have today, a world where there is war and hate. I think no matter who you are we all want what's best for our kids and those we care about. We can't do it all by ourselves, but we can do it together. So hopefully this day also means something to you, a day where freedom can make a difference in your life and in the lives of the people around you.
