Movie Monday: Ghost in the shell
I'll be honest with you, I've never seen the anime show the ghost in the shell so this movie was unknown territory for me. I don't even like anime that much but I was curious about this movie, so what do you do when you're curious? You check it out! In my opinion the movie is pretty good, I mean not amazing but still fun to watch if only for the one time.
Major isn't a robot?
In the opening credits you can aleady see what's going on, a human brain is put inside an artificial body and together they would be the perfect weapon. It's actually an impressive and interesting moment in the movie that does kind of make you wonder where we're going with technology. At first Major follows orders, she does what she's told and doesn't ask too many questions. But after some time things don't seem to be exactly as she thought they would be and it turns out the people she trusted are keeping something from her. So you can imagine that Major wants to find out what that is, but not everyone is happy that she's finding out the truth!
Impressive movie or cheap copy of the anime show?
I couldn't really say if the movie is a cheap copy of the show but from what I heard a lot of fans aren't upset with the movie, at least the fans that actually watched the movie. So I take it that the movie isn't a cheap copy, which is a good thing because it sucks when movies are only cheap copies from something you love so much. What I like about the movie is the action but also the futuristic environment where it all takes place. I get a strong Blade Runner feeling when I see Major walking in the city, which isn't a bad thing because I like Blade Runner. But Ghost in the shell is a bit more flashy and considering that this movie comes out more than three decades later that makes a lot of sense. The story is interesting as well, it shows some character development and eventhough the focus is mostly on Major there is also some room for other characters like Batou.
Is it worth checking out this movie?
I think it is, especially if you've never seen the anime show because then the movie is completely new to you. But maybe it's also fun for the fans of the show because the movie isn't bad at all! I know that some people are mad that Major is played by an American actress, Scarlett Johansson, but you should keep in mind that her artificial body isn't the way she used to look so it could look like anyone and it would still make sense. I think the movie is a fun movie to watch, a bit weird maybe but that's ok because these are usually the best type of movies. Just look at a movie like the Matrix, weird yes but also very good! Ghost in the shell is worth checking out, if only just once. I can definitely recommend it!
