Prey: Opening hour demo, this game is even better than I thought!
Have you played the Prey Opening hour demo? I can really recommend checking it out, it gives you a good impression if the game is for you or not because you get quite a lot of freedom in the first part of the game so you can explore and investigate on your own in a creepy space station. Oh did I say on your own? I meant you against a lot of creepy aliens (they're called mimics) that can turn into objects and attack you when you don't expect it!
Prey is a combination of Bioshock and Dead Space?
You could say that, but in my opinion Dead Space (the first two games) is a lot scarier but don't think that Prey is going to be a smooth ride. There are aliens that look creepy and to be honest are creepy! Some of them can turn into objects and unless you feel like hitting everything you see you will be caught off guard sooner or later. A lot is unclear and when you figure out that the people around you were lying to you it's difficult to trust anyone, but a mysterious figure named January is helping you. What's interesting about Prey is that you can play as a male or as a female character but your name stays the same, Morgan Yu. There is no character customization but that's fine, the male and female version of Morgan both look pretty good so why change something that isn't broken?
Crafting, but just a bit different?
In Prey you'll quickly discover you can pick up a lot of items, some of these items you carry with you in your inventory. At first I didn't know what I was supposed to do with that until you find a machine that recycles these items into materials you can use to craft new items with. This is useful for getting more health items and ammo, but you can also craft weapons if you find the right blueprints in the game. This makes collecting junk actually quite useful and it gives the game more freedom to craft your own items and you can get what you think you need the most. You also have acces to a lot of different weapons. In the demo you already get a wrench, Shotgun, silenced pistol and gloo cannon (this fires a type of foam that becomes hard on contact and makes it easier to kill the mimics). There are more things but certain items are hidden and you need certain skills to get these. You get acces to all this in a skill menu with neuro items that count towards skill points so you can unlock new abilities or you can prove abilities you already have. This gives you acces to hacking, fixing broken machine, you can take more damage before you die or you can become more stealthy. You can pick whatever you want, at least if you have enough neuro items to unlock that ability.
Is this game worth checking out?
I think it is because it looks like a lot of fun and it's not that difficult. I do find it a bit frustrating that a lot of doors require different keycards to open, so you sometimes will have to search an area for a keycard just to make it further in the game. Often these keycards aren't that difficult to find but it can be boring to constantly look for these items. The creepy mimics can be anywhere but if you're lucky you see one of them turn into an object and then it's easy to identify them but sometimes you enter a room and suddenly three mimics jump out of nowhere and you have to fight to survive or they will destroy you! The aliens also come in the form of bigger more dangerous forms, for example the phantoms who do a lot more damage and are a lot tougher to kill if you don't use the right weapons! Prey is an interesting adventure definitely worth checking out! It's creepy and mysterious, exactly what the curious and brave gamer is looking for! If you're not convinced you can play the opening hour demo for free on Xboxlive and PSN, so see for yourself if this game is something for you.
