Sinful Sunday: Envy
Have you ever been envious? It's nothing new to feel that way, even when you play games there will be people that will envy you. For example you got good loot from a drop, you got a fancy aura or other cosmetic item, you managed to get a difficult achievement or trophy and some people just envy you because you have a game they would like to have as well. But should you always be envious? Instead of being envious you could also try to get something yourself, it beats just sitting there and wishing you would have something someone else already has.
Why would you be envious?
Oh come on, have you never been envious? There is nothing wrong with a little bit of envy, just don't let it go out of control. For example when someone has a cool armor in a game then I can be envious, but I won't let it drive me crazy that I will go out of my way to get it. For example in For Honor you have a cool aura effect for the knights, it's called hellfire, and I would like to get it. But it costs 15.000 steel for one character or 45.000 for all four knight characters. I don't know about you but I think that's a lot of steel and time I would have to put in the game to earn all that. As much as I would like to have it I'm not going to, because I prefer not to spend too much time on one game just because of one cool thing. As I said before there is nothing wrong with a little bit of envy, I'd say it's a pretty normal reaction as long as you don't let it drive you crazy. See if that envy turns into an obsession then you've got a problem and I would strongly recommend looking for some distractions because it's not healthy to put your focus on something that you want but can't or you're unable to get at the moment. Instead of being envious you could also be happy for another person, yes this probably sounds lame but especially with friends it's better to be happy for them than to feel resentment just because they have something you would want. Envy is a natural feeling but not a positive one, so instead of putting your focus on the negative you could try to see something positive. For example you want something and try to get that by working for it or earning it. Don't expect things to fall into your lap just like that, people that got things you would like to get probably have earned that themselves so instead of being envious you could just get to work and earn it yourself!
Envy is dangerous?
It can if you let it be, because if your envy is left unchecked it can turn into an obsession and obsessions aren't a good thing! This is why it's important that you distract yourself and not put your focus on just one thing. I prefer to switch it up a bit, play one game for now and play another game the next day or maybe already after a couple of hours. It really depends on the game and the situation but playing the same game for too long can be unhealthy for more than the obvious reason. Sure it's not healthy to play a game for hours and hours, but it can also be unhealthy to be completely obessed with one game. Especially in a multiplayer game where you see other people have stuff you want, if you let that turn into an obession of you wanting what they have then it can make you do dumb things. Just think about the loot boxes in Overwatch, I've heard stories of people that spend hundreds of Dollars or Euros on them just to get a certain skin, emote or something else they really want. Especially during an event some people go crazy with this, because the event only last for three weeks and after the event you can't get these items anymore. So that often means a lot of people will try to get the cool stuff they really want, which can turn into a real obsession. It only becomes worse when they see other people with the skin, emote or something else they really want. Then it only drives them more to get what they want, which is quite dangerous because before you know it they spend a lot of money on loot boxes just to get what they want. There is nothing wrong with wanting something but don't let that turn into an obsession, because you often don't think clearly at that point and might do some dumb things. Instead of going crazy for getting what you want you might want to take a break, get some fresh air and hopefully you see that it doesn't really matter if you get something in a game. Because in the end it's just a game and your real life is more important!
