Movie Monday: Assassin's Creed
A lot of people thought that Assassin's Creed would be the game movie (movie inspired by a game) that would finally make game movies good, but unfotunately it seems the majority didn't agree with that. But is Assassin's Creed really that bad? Let's find out!
Things are a bit different?
If you played a lot of Assassin's Creed games then you probably know what to expect, but the movie is a bit different. First of all the way the test subjects are put into the animus is something completely different, instead of a chair that puts you into the animus the main character Callum Lynch is plugged in with some type of device in his neck and a big machine holds him in the middle and moves with him as he connects with his ancestor Aguilar. This creates some spectacular scenes but also feels weird to the Assassin's Creed fan. Also the switching constantly between Aquilar and Callum in fight scenes is annoying as well. I think people just want to see Aquilar in action and not how Callum moves in his device. What's also different is that in the time of Aquilar everyone speaks Spanish, ok this makes sense but in the games everyone would speak English to make it easier for the gamer. But for the movie they wanted to make it authentic and I actually appreciate that, because that seems way more realistic that everyone speaks English all the time in Spain.
What about the story?
I think the story fits pretty good in the game series, not just because they used one of the most important artifacts from the game, the apple of Eden, but also the whole knights vs assassins theme is well represented in the movie. This starts a bit slow but later in the movie this becomes quite clear. The main character Callum Lynch, played by Michael Fassbender, is an interesting character and in my opinion could've been the main character in a game. I don't know if that was the idea but he fits in nicely. I do think the knights are shows as if they're weak and afraid, this doesn't seem that much at first but later in the movie you can see the panic when a small group of assassins shows up. Which probably means that most knights are just posh bastards that can't fight for shit. The fights scenes are pretty good, it's fast actions with some well known parkour moments that also fit in well with the movie.
Is this movie worth checking out?
I think it is, maybe not for everyone but I think if you like the Assassin's Creed games then you might be interested in the movie. People that have never played the Assassin's Creed games might be less interested in the movie. A lot of things just seem to drop out of nowhere and with no knowledge about the Assassin's Creed universe you might feel a bit lost in the story. But even if you are completely new to Assassin's Creed you can still have a good time watching this movie. It's not all talking and story building, there is a lot going on in the movie so you don't have to worry to get bored. It might take a moment before you get there so some patience is required! I don't think that the movie is amazing but it's definitely fun to watch and I can recommend it to anyone that likes action and a little bit of fantasy.
