Mass Effect Andromeda, one week later...
As you probably know a lot of people hate this game, how many of these people have actually played the game is unknown to me but it wouldn't surprise me if there are a lot of these haters that have never played the game. I think what you would like to know if Mass Effect Andromeda is worth buying. A short answer, yes it's worth buying but you should keep in mind that the game does have some issues and for some people that can be enough reason for not wanting to play it or not play it just yet.
Mass Effect Andromeda has issues?
Well that's an understatement, I mean just yesterday I tried to visit a new planet for the first time and the cutscene got stuck. The eyes of the characters were moving but they were all in t pose standing there, that was actually quite hilarious but unfortunately it also broke the game. After waiting for almost a minute I decided to skip the scene and I went into a loading screen. Well that loading screen never ended, so I restarted my console and loaded my save file. I was back on the ship and the two people who I wanted to take with me on the planet were also armed with me on the bridge. I knew that the game was broken but this was just ridiculous, what's worse is that when I wanted to check on my strike teams I lost connection with the Mass Effect Andromeda servers and somehow the results of my team coming back from a mission were all gone. This also meant having to get out of the game and get back in to connect to the servers once more. That was a lot of trouble for one buggy moment! Then there are of course the facial animations that are sometimes weird or just not existing. What is also annoying is when you stand next to a npc and somehow you can talk to this character or you can't open the door eventhough you're standing right in front of it. This sometimes means you have to back up and try moving slowly forward again. The game will stotter, which means the game will get stuck for a short moment and then shake loose. These are all annoying moments in the game and hopefully one day they will be fixed. So if there are people that aren't happy with this and would rather wait until the game is fixed then you can do that. But I wonder how much of all this is going to get fixed, a lot of these issues got through testing so it gives me the idea that the developers are ok with it. The players on the other hand are probably not so ok with that and I don't blame them. Does that make Mass Effect Andromeda a bad game? No, but it definitely hurts to see a game I was looking forward to playing like this.
Never a boring moment?
There is a lot to do in Mass Effect Andromeda, I mean a lot! There are so many side missions and things you can do that you probably don't have enough time to do it all and even if you do make time to do it all then it might take you several weeks to do it all. I think that the developers went a bit crazy with all these side missions, especially the ones where you have to deliver or visit several different planets because it means you have to travel all over the place for just one of many missions which can be frustrating. That's why I usually collect all the missions, then see what's near me and what requires me to go further. This system of playing missions makes it a bit more tolerable but it's still a lot of work to do it all and it wouldn't surprise me if some people just skip a lot of side missions just to get further with the story. The missions themselves can also be quite repetitive, so if you decide to do all those missions just keep in mind that you're in for some similar experiences which can be boring for some people. I do enjoy some missions and the humour also makes things a lot more tolerable, but it doesn't take away the fact that there are a lot of missions and it will take a lot of time to do it all. So it's probably smarter to concentrate on the more important missions first and do the small side missions (they're called tasks in the game) later.
Is the team you're playing with fun?
This is something I was worried about. I mean how can anyone replace Liara, Garrus and Tali? Well they can't, but that doesn't make this team bad. In fact some characters are quite fun to hang around with and I don't mean just for the hot alien sex. Cora is actually a fun person to hang around with, she might act tough on the outside but is actually quite nice once you get to know her and she doesn't mind teasing back. Peebee is the Asari rebel that likes to keep herself busy, in a way she reminds me of Liara but at the same time she's a completely different person and that's not a bad thing! Vetra is the Turian in your team and she's actually quite nice, unfortunately she can't replace Garrus and perhaps that's for the best. It does remind you how some people aren't here with you in this adventure. But if you unlock enough memories from your father, in the game, then you will stumble on some files where you hear that Alec Ryder has been in contact with Liara and it's nice that she has a small cameo in the game. Drack is the Krogan and is pretty much acting like a Krogan, this is nothing new. What is new is that Drack is a much older Krogan, he's over a thousand years old! Gil and Suvi are two other romance options on board of the ship and are exclusively interested in a romance with someone of the same gender, so once again Bioware give the people what they want. Just keep in mind that not everyone is interested in that, so if as a guy you're interested in Liam then he will tell you he's not interested and the same counts for Cora if you're playing as a female character. The flirting is fun and can lead to some interesting moments in the game. So maybe Shepard had a more interesting team, I wouldn't call Ryder's team bad or boring. They're actually fun to hang around with and keep in mind that this is just the first game with this team and Shepard's team you know for already three games!
Should you buy this game or not?
Well I can't and won't tell you what you should do, but you should keep in mind that if you want to buy this game that the game has issues. I already told you about some of those but I would like to add to say that these issues don't ruin the game, it can be tough at times but I never feel like turning off my console and not playing the game anymore. It's not a huge problem and sometimes it's even hilarious to see characters freak out in a conversation or when I'm exploring. I even had a moment where Drack multiplied during a conversation, so one moment there is one Krogan and then there is an exact copy standing next to him. I understand that some people would hate this and maybe Mass Effect Andromeda is more for fans than for new players, becaus with all the issues the game has probably only fans can get through that and still enjoy the game while new players are probably too annoyed with all the issues. Maybe I'm wrong but I can't help but get the feeling that the game won't get a huge patch, the developers might try to fix some parts but the game as it is is probably going to keep some of these awkward and strange things in it. That's a shame but once again I will say that this doesn't ruin the game, at least not for me. If you're really uncertain about this game then rent it, see what you think of it and if you're ok with the issues this game has. In my opinion it's worth checking Mass Effect Andromeda out, even if there are moments that things go horribly wrong. In the end it's a fun game and it can definitely keep you busy for a long time!
